Hands on hatching and help

Collecting eggs now for 7 days to hatch. Can I "turn" them in my Brinsea Octagon automatic turner? I wondered if there is enough air inside without the fan on.

Should be fine. I leave mine in a closed carton on my counter, and rarely turn them . But If it makes you feel better, you could leave the lid off. :)

Yay another chick just hatched! 5/9
Also the one that pipped at 5:30 has indeed pipped on the opposite side of the air pocket?!?! Is that ok?
It is chirping and breathing (you can see through the hole) would this be called a breach? Like a baby is upside down?

Its fine and not unusual. They can externally pip without internally pipping first. If they get air from outside, they don't "need" the air in the air cell.

But.... how far down the egg is the hole?? It could be malpositioned (breach or other abnormal position term in chickens lol)

Number 6 hatched!!!!
Here is the one from 5:30 this morning! It is at the other end of the air pocket.

Oh yes, definite malposition! Sometimes those can hatch on their own, looks like a nice clean hole, so it can breathe fine. But the pointy end of the egg doesn't always have enough room for it to rotate. Being a nice fat egg, it could very well do fine on its own.

Ugh, that's a tough decision. I would probably give it a little more time (like to maybe 18-20 hours-ish), then chip away some of the shell around the pointed end, moisten the membrane looking for active blood vessels. If no heavy blood vessels, then consider peeling the membrane off. Then let the chick kick out on its own.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

And congrats on #6!!

All weekend? Yes I think I would definitely remove the air cell cap of the shell.
Congrats! How long has the one had the big hole? Does it keep trying to just make it wider? Might need to intervene and help it out a little. :fl

Exactly what I was thinking when I read it...lol

My little group from the weekend. They are so friendly!

Congrats! They are adorable

Ok thanks :) this is my first incubation and man oh man so many people doing so many different things...lol the no paper towels makes since I was just afraid they were getting to dry. I just read the shrinkwrapped thread and terrified that is what is going to happen!! :/

I used to use wet paper towels around my eggs when I started an assist if I had a big area of membrane exposed. I had no problems doing it that way, but then I started using neosporin or Vaseline on the exposed membrane and it worked so much better without having to waste towels.

Many do use their turners while storing. I'm like WV though, I store them in a carton and if I remember they get tilted when I add eggs...lol

Xs 2 on about everything....as usual...lol

Got my Brinsea back finally, but even that was made as complicated as possible. They made it require a signature on delivery - well, I'm not home when the mail is delivered so of course I missed it. And of course it was Friday so the post office was only open until noon the next day. I work a night shift, there was no way I was going to be out of bed and ready to go before noon.

Luckily my father offered to go and get it, and he did - and they were so cheap about it that they actually sent it back in the box I sent it to them in. They couldn't even send it in a fresh box! And they just reused the packing materials too, but they didn't even pack it up, they just set it on top of all the newspaper.
