Hands on hatching and help

Had to show a Serama chick that needed a little assistance today.

I think it got a little rolled by another chick, and somehow popped its leg out. I was just glad I saw it in time.
Sorry some of the pics are blurry, I was more concerned with getting the baby out. lol

Awesome ending!!

Hatch in progress! Looks like I'm having better success this time around. So much for needing higher humidity if at higher elevations. I lowered my incubation humidity to 45%-50% and my hatch humidity to about 60% and let it rise naturally as the chicks hatch. 3 of my 5 Buckeyes hatched, the other 2 looked like they quit a couple of days before lockdown. They pipped and zipped within 6 hours and I have 8 of 11 silkies pipped right now. Polish/Sultans are due to start pipping tomorrow. I also removed eggs from the turner at 16 days and so far no wrong end pips! Here are my beautiful Buckeyes.

Mind if I join? Today is 21. We've already lost 3 chicks, which I blame partly on inexperience and because I didn't know whether to meddle or not. The first started pipping on day 19! I've had a chick dragging her yolk around and another that pipped facing the ground. The one still alive right now had an open navel, so I first put iodine and later cornstarch (I read both of those options somewhere here). We have 8 more eggs and I'm hoping for a higher hatch rate!

Sounds like we've had the same problem. I've had two hatch one with a open navel which is fine now one hasn't pipped yet and one that hasn't absorbed its yolk yet. I checked my other eggs and they were all dead so I may have 4 out of 18 which is pretty poor

That's funny. I picture the cartons with the egg running around on two legs sticking out. Good that you caught it though.

What elevation are you at? I stop turning at the end of day 13. I haven't had an upsidedown pipper, (other than the two that grew too big to turn because I was stupid enough to set my jumbo nn/ee eggs with tiny silkie eggs and they didn't loose enough moisture) in forever.

Welcome to the thread. What was your temps and humidity for incubation and now? Sorry to hear you are having troubles.

Sorry to hear it's not such a great hatch.

I'm in N Central FL, so elevation about 100ft or so. I think incubation temp was 102. Thermometer was set on the egg turner, not the eggs, but it's kind of a stand up thermometer, if that makes sense. I left the temp alone for hatching, aside from whatever my toddler did to it yesterday when I caught her with her hand on the dial. Could a higher temp cause premature hatching? I don't have a hydrometer.

Sorry to hear. :( I've heard so many times the last few days not to count your chickens before they hatch. I have a whole new appreciation for that phrase, but it's not exactly helpful in the middle of a hatch. We started with 15 eggs. We'll see what we end up with though. So far 6 are gone.

Ok so my turkey hatches are way off kilter, This next hatch is due Friday (tomorrow), this one zipped & hatched by itself 2 days early (yesterday) and I don't even have any others pipped yet. I am going to have to regroup the brooders, dunno who to put this little guy with. I have one brooder with chicken chicks that are 3 weeks and another brooder with a turkey chick that is 2 weeks old I paired him with a frizzle bantam for company. I have the small chicken house that I am putting the three week olds out in during the days since it is in the 90's here in Florida, but it drops to high sixties at night, I am wondering if I can go ahead and move the 3 week olds out there permanently? When Indoors for the night they have had a heating pad on low at night but it is covered with shavings so it is really not putting out that much heat. I think I will put this little one with the other turkey chick and move the frizzle back with the chicken chicks. Hopefully the other eggs will hatch soon.
