Happy Mother's Day to Carol the Muscovy wonder duck..she hatched this morning

Great update. Your ducks are so lucky. I wish mine had access to a real pond. But, for now tgey enjoy their kiddie pool.
What a great pic with the frog!

Catching the frogs is the easy part. Getting them down required some work. I should have done video. It wasn't easy getting that picture. The duck was sure I was trying to take the frog and kept moving as I got close......so I had to follow it through the swamp.

WEEK 6: Carnage in Paradise

I thought I was done with this thread. Babies growing, happy. Mom, Dad adjusting. Even aunt Beth was having fun with the little ones. Everything was rosy, happy. Until the dark days began this week.

The chicks are feathering out nicely, they look more like ducks than anything else. Mom is seen here and there on her own as well. I noticed Daryl sort of chasing them away from mom this week. Natural, I thought. Time to grow up kids, dad is forcing the issue a bit. Stand on your own two feet. Duck business, I thought. Best to stay out of it.

I had to rescue a chick today. Daryl had him cornered and was literally trying to kill him. Or her, I really don't know. I separated them immediately and put Daryl in duck jail.

His aggressiveness has been getting worse. Even keeping them away or chasing them from the food on their three trips up the hill daily to feed. I have been reading here ......and I don't like what I am reading. I don't like it at all.

There are dark clouds forming over my land.

WEEK 7: I am mother.

Ok, scratch the above postings about mothering. They are good mothers until week 6. Now, eh, you guys are on your own. So Little Muscovies have basically two sounds. Help me....help me! and Oh boy this is good!. That's it.

With mom out of the picture they have learned I come to kiss the boo boos.

Now my property is basically two places, the up top, pens, food, etc. And Down below ....the pond and wild area. Every day at 6pm sharp they start screaming for me. I have to go down the trail and go come with me little ducks. They pour out of the pond and start following me. They won't come up by themselves. Even Barney the wonder dog has tried to get them to follow him up the hill.

But nooooo. they won't go up the trail. It has steps, so I have to crawl on my hands and knees up the duck trail over the hill and under the fence. Every day. Then I lock them in for nighty night and the cycle repeats.

Carol, mom, just sits and watches.

Somehow, I have turned into a duck mother. I don't know what the rules around this place, but I want some serious duck street cred for this stuff. I'm doing the work.

I can't seem to end this thread. The drama around Muscovies is worse than your average soap opera.

:love They need a leader and your it!. Bless your heart and thank you for keep the saga going we sure enjoy it. They are so pretty, and if Carol stayed 6 weeks then she needs a medal for best mama duck of the year. Mine are only about 4 -5 weeks before they say good bye to mothering.
