Not sure! I consider her a rescue. I brought her home in mid-October along with a second LH and a CA white. They were spring 2018 hatches. She only weighed 2.98 pounds. She now weighs 3.83 pounds so she gained almost 1/3 of her body weight with proper nutrition.

That's a great gain!

One of my pullets laid her first egg today! Another one beat her out by a few days, started on Tuesday and has laid an egg daily since (and last I checked she was in a nest box).

Had fun teaching the little ones how to use a nest box. I never covered them as they never were interested in them, so they still didn't understand what they were for. Once they started showing immediate interest in laying, I had to pick them up and place them inside, block them in for about 30 seconds, and after that they noticed the fake eggs and started fussing around inside the box.

Hens are all still freeloading.

Awesome! Congrats on the first egg! They will figure out where to lay eventually I think once one gets it, the rest follow suit.

Happy Solstice! We are officially on our ways to longer days in the northern hemisphere and hopefully more eggs. Feel free to share pictures of your girls and their eggs when they resume laying here and let's celebrate. I think it's crazy how they know that days are even one minute longer. Last year I had a girl lay on the day after solstice. Today I heard the egg song for the first time in ages!

My girls are all 7-9 months old, so they're still laying. My Ancona took the month of November off, but has laid 2 extra-large eggs and a fairy egg over the past week. Everyone else (except for 1 of my 2 Easter Eggers) has started laying over the past 2 months and they are each still giving me an egg every other day on average. I know next winter will be a different story, so I'm enjoying the abundance.

I know, in the final days I only had one layer and even she had quit 2-3 weeks ago. We had to buy eggs this winter

Same here, store bought eggs all winter. They just can't compare to the 'home grown' ones from my flock of 5! This is the 2nd winter for my girls though, so guess it's to be expected (not liked, but expected )

For most of my flock it's the second and third winter too. I hadn't had store eggs in awhile and couldn't believe how immediately on cracking eggs in the pan that the yolks would break. The thin shells were quite obvious too. I was planning on doing all my Christmas baking with duck eggs, but no luck there... Now I've got one duck egg, so if I get a few more in the next 48 hours I might be able to pull it off! I know this is unlikely, but I think with the recipes I have left I only need 3 eggs total, so it's possible.
