hard grey lump on nostrils...HELP anybody??

Hey there, new to the site and looking for help!!
We are new chicken farmers, we have 26 X Rocks, app 5.5 months old and 27 Barred Rocks 4 months old. Everybody is spoiled and happy...

We discovered a female X Rock sneezing 2 days ago. Upon looking at her she had a large gray, hard lump covering her nostril. My husband took the lump off and said it was hard and callus. His first thought was a calcium deposit. We quarantined her from the rest of the flock. When he took it off, it did take some of the under surface with it but it did not bleed...

We have noticed one other female with the same lump, but this time we didn't remove it...yet.

Not that you can tell from my avatar, but that is the girl from today.

All I can tell is a form of maybe "wet" pox??? They do not have any lumps on their combs, it is only on the nostril...

It is early in the apparent development of the virus, but it is a concern for us.

Anybody have a clue?????? Please help!!

I have no idea but I have the same problem. How did your dh remove it?? Here is a bump...

Howdy!
Having a hard time figuring out how to put pics on here...
On the removal, he just pulled it off! It took a bit of the top layer of skin and that little bump on the nostril, but did not bleed. He said it was hard and first thought was calcium deposit...
I am looking for answers or info on the classroom at the coop message board, and will post on here if anybody has a clue.
feel free to e-mail me and I can send a better picture. It is really weird, not on the combs, waddles, or hte mouth or throat, just a mass on the nostril!!

Well...looks like we have the Pox...
We were out playing with the birds and a couple days made the difference on spots. A couple of the X Rocks have the very distinctive white bumps on their combs...I am sad.
I still would love to hear from anybody that has had a pox on the nostril...still weird.

If it's really pox, you'll just have to let it run it's course since it's viral.

Thanks for the info! I did find the FAQ section...now I get to play. I did upload 2 pictures, and I can't seem to find them on here

I will get it someday.

Also, on the lumps...I do hope that is all it is...they look so bad with those bumps, but I am so very glad it won't kill them!! I am seasoned on the fact some of them will meet the dinner table (that's why we got them

), but I'd hate to loose them over a sickness. They really are a trip to watch and play with!
We are still hoping for that first egg before winter hits here in Tx...but it will probably be Spring. We want them to have a few "replacement" chicks before a few of the lesser personality ones become dinner.
I never would have thought there was so much to a happy chicken!!!

I am so thankful to sites like BYC to have a place to learn from!!

Just a quick update :

all seems to be well...the 2 girls with the weird lump have the pox, but are A-Ok otherwise

I assume the lump is part of it.

The girls we removed the nostril lump from is our first (of 3) and best layer

so I guess she isn't very stressed about it.

The other girl is the 2nd layer....go figure!!

I just posted a similar problem but my hens do not have pox. This has been going on now for a couple weeks, and they have not developed pox. I think you might be having two separate things going on. I do not know what it is, but if I hear back from anyone I will let you know. I'm too nervous to take it off, I'm afraid it's gone all the way through and I'd break her beak in half.

Really??? Wow, I just figured...

My avitar on here is one of my girls (#2) Unlike the first one, it didn't develop on top of the nostril, so she is breathing fine, no sneezing.

And my group defiantly has the pox, we are on day 4 now...

Check out and post on backyardchickens.com also, there are a ton of folks on there also
