This is our Phoebe, a 12-week-old Buff Orpington pullet. Recently, our coop got attacked by an owl and we lost one. Ever since then, Phoebe’s been acting strange (lethargic, quiet, weirdly dilated eyes). We chalked it up to her being traumatized, as we recently learned chickens can get mental trauma.

Keep in mind, since then, we haven’t seen her fully extend her neck- and we’re not even sure if she can anymore. We recently noticed a hard lump in her neck. Originally, we thought she broke her neck, but she can still pick up her head. Then we thought impacted crop, but we have to be sure.

Neck injuries can be common. Can you take a picture where it captures if the neck is twisted to one side? Does the hard area feel like bone or solid tissue? Is she able to bend down to eat and drink?

The hard area feels more like bone. And yes, she can bend over to eat and drink. She is also able to bob her head while walking.
