So we stapled in the hardware cloth but when I pull on it it breaks, would it be strong enough if an animal (racoons) were to pull on it, would it hold? Is there a better option?

You can’t staple the edge like that .. once it’s cut it can start to come apart . Place a strip of wood , like mentioned above , and staple/ screw it on .

Try to pull it in the middle , if it breaks there’s something wrong with that product

Any raccoon could easily pull that out. Frankly, even a small dog, if it really wanted to. I go with wood strips and screws and fender washers over mine. Can't be too careful where raccoons are concerned, IMO.

Interesting, I stapled mine on and it doesn’t break like yours.

We used a pneumatic stapler shooting 1 1/4” staples and adjusted the regulator until it stopped breaking the cloth. I can do a pull up off it.

These work well, but they take a special stapler... or a hammer.

** edit -- sorry I guess these would just break through too. I've never seen hardware cloth break like that
