hardware cloth

It comes in different gauges. Different stores offer varying to no variety of gauges, but you can get it.

There are very few things that are literally going to tear through chain link fencing, and only slightly more that will get through hardware cloth. I think the major premise behind hardware cloth is to deter critters from reach through fences with large holes and grabbing chickens (which they will then proceed to tear through in a very unsavory manner). In our run, the primary fencing is 14 gauge 2"x4" welded wire. Hardware cloth is installed inside that to a height of 4 feet.

I just got back from HD buying more material plus a another roll of HC, and it's 19 guage. Now you got me concerned that I need more than the HC. I've just put on one layer of HC.

I think if you attach the HC securely with screws and fenderwashers every 6-10" there is very little that can get through it. The weak spot of chickenwire is that it is twisted not welded at the connections and therefore less strong. From what I've read here 19 ga HC is fine provided it is attached securely.

X2!!!! You'll be very glad you put it up. Predators can't rip or chew thru it because they can't get any leverage on it and/or not strong enough anyway. If it's put up as above person recommend then the only predator that will be able to get thru is a large bear, which is very hard to defend against if not impossible.
