So... I took Peeper out on the grass this afternoon for some fresh air. Had a fab time and followed me like a little dog.
Popped he/she back in to the guinea cage and panic broke out!! Peeping louder than ever, would not settle. I’d made a real rod for my own back by letting Peeper follow my boots round the garden! I’ve had to resort to this and all is quiet again

Yes, it seems these are excellent parent’s  In Peeper’s eyes anyway! Not sure what I’m going to do when I go do Harry in the morning? :idunno I’m going to have to rummage in the cupboard for something else to wear :p

He's going to grow up to be a Goose with a boot obsession. :lau

I was so excited when I saw an alert to say you had posted an attachment! Thought we were going to see you in your glad rags with a boater on your head but instead I find a photo of an incubator and boots..... it a funny story though. If you turn them upside down they might look more like gosling parents.
I need to go up and check on my broody but I am dreading it! Not the usual emotion I have when broodies are hatching chicks:hmm

Hi Kim

Many thanks for the info on Red Cell. I think ill splash the cash on trying it rather than another vets bill just at the moment. He just looks a bit sad rather than his usual mischievous self but nothing I can put my finger on seems amiss. Those occasions usually end up costing lots of money with the vet because a full spectrum of tests are necessary, so more inclined to try the Red Cell and see. Rascal has always been a shaggy monster and is usually the last to lose his coat but I don't think he has Cushings. I had Cora tested a few years ago and she was low/ borderline but she shows no symptoms even now although her winter coat is also taking it's time to fully cast. She and Rasc do have fine summer coats coming in though, they are just struggling in this heat with the old and the new. Rascal stands and sweats at the best of times and last winter I didn't clip him, so maybe that is what is making him feel so sluggish..... goodness knows I'm struggling with this hot weather.
I lost another egg yesterday.... crushed with nearly full term chick inside. This morning one was just hatched and still wet and another was crushed in the shell but still alive and yolk fully absorbed, so I helped it out of the broken shell. Looks like she is just a very clumsy broody and being a Light Sussex, she has some weight to her. There was another egg pipping but she got off to have a broody break regardless and I had a difficult time getting her back onto the nest but once on she was clucking away to them. I don't think I will b letting her set eggs again, she just isn't careful and dedicated enough. I must have been really spoilt with my first few broody hens as they were all wonderful. I might let the next pekin that offers hatch some from my own flock. I think I will probably be lucky to get 3 or 4 from the 10 eggs I set with this one.
Good to hear your gosling is still doing well and coping with being alone. Do you have the option of keeping it or are you committed to handing it over? I'm sure you can integrate it into your flock somehow if necessary.

So pleased you had a good day at the races. You have worked so hard recently, a day of fun and frivolity was just what you needed (maybe not the hangover).... but every once in a while you need to let your hair down. Pixie looks very smart and I can understand you being proud of your connection. Did you get all dressed up and wear a hat etc? If so, we need to see a pic of you too??

Think that is all my news. Got to head out and do a bit more gardening (weed cutting) and potting up in my poly tunnel. Peas have flowers on so we will be picking pea pods soon!! I'm even trying to grow water melons this year, but don't hold out high hopes although if I don't manage in this weather I doubt it will ever be possible!
Hope your head has cleared and you have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes

Barbara

No probs Barbara, anytime :highfive: I hope the red cell gives him a lift and he can shed that coat :fl Harry is as bad at shedding, there is still some to get out of him. Especially his back end where he wasn’t clipped. It seems by the time this lot comes out his new winter will be starting to come through!

Such a shame on the eggs :( Hope the rest of the Hatch goes ok and she can keep her clumsiness under control. Maybe she would better second time round? As I’ve only ever had one broody I wouldn’t know if they get better the more they try?

I’m really not sure we could keep Peeper until full adulthood as they are so big and the mess they make gives my OCD the shivers  I would love to though so we shall see....

Certainly could have done without the hangover but the day was worth it. I’m afraid no posh frock or hat for me, would not want to scare anyone! Smart casual is the dress code so a nice pair of summery trousers and Top was it.

Peas! :drool I have my eye on a couple of fields down the road from us but no flowers yet...... :pop

I like a bit of water melon... we have planted a cucumber plant & a couple of runner beans today but that’s as exciting as it is. Unless Keeper eats them!

:lau Peeper has imprinted on your boots!

Everyone, meet Mr. and Mrs. Boot and their darling baby, Peeper.

At least you can leave her on her own... hope you like going barefoot! :)

Have you heard the story of the man that raised some Canada geese and used and ultralight to teach them to migrate? They made a movie about it. (Fly Away Home)

Sorry to disappoint Barbara but you wouldn’t want nightmares would you??

I think a lot of muck might fall in the guinea cage if I turned them upside down

Fingers crossed on the broody & that everything is ok :fl

Mr & Mrs Boot  Love it! For a quiet life I will struggle on barefoot.

I have seen that film Wishing but it was quite a while a go. Isn’t it sad at the end when they go?

For someone who is always so positive in your outlook to everyone else you should try a bit more on yourself. I would love to see a photo of you in your posh clothes. Did you wear a dress and hat? At least indulge me with a description. One of the big things about going to the races is getting dressed up and for those like you and I that live in jodhs and jeans and boots, it's a big deal to get togged up for a special event. I bet you looked fab!
Still haven't been up to see the broody.... Oh the dread! Gotta go tho!

Yes, the price of peace and quiet... thankfully it's not winter!

I have never seen the film, just remember reading about it when the original man tried it. It's always hard to let go of an animal for me, but then I supposed if they had stayed, he'd be looking at them every day thinking they are missing out on a real life.
Do you have Cananda geese in UK? We have quite a few that are permanent residents here. I saw some goslings at a park earlier this spring. Very cute.
