Harvey the Great is Dying. . .

I'm feeling really sad. Harvey will not eat. I tried scrambled egg, mealworms, 20% starter mash, dove and quail seed and even some greens. He won't open his mouth to any of it. And he does love his girls, and they love him too. I had him isolated in the run this morning to try to get him to eat and the hens were not happy, they milled around the door wanting to get in. When none of his favorite foods worked, I opened the run again for the girls to come in. It started raining and it's the only shelter they have anyway. He is still walking around, every couple of hours when I go to check on him and tempt him with food he is in a completely different place. It doesn't look like this will end well for him. I have a feeling that he's genetically messed up in some way. :hit
I agree with caramel kitty. Force feeding might work. Hope he gets better.

How’s Harvey The Great doing @Peppercorngal ?
Oh i hope he’s going to feel better soon.
He’s one handsome guy (and his name suits him) i’ll keep my fingers crossed for you :)
This morning my husband went with me to release the chickens from the nighttime safety of the run to free range. He watched Harvey walk very slowly out of the run and down the hill with the girls. He didn't seem interested before (husband that is) but he has gone to town to buy children's vitamins and this afternoon we are going to try to get some food and vitamins Harvey! I'm feeling hopeful! :fl

I've been planning all afternoon on how and where to isolate him. We have 3 dogs, they would all love to kill him so the house/laundry room is out. I have a dog crate but I think it's too small for him, he wouldn't be able to stand at all. I'm trying to brainstorm a cage that he will fit in and won't get eaten by the dogs, the only other place I can put him is the garage. Ever since he was a few months old he's been getting vitamins (the whole flock does) regularly but maybe I should increase it for him alone. I'll do everything I can for him. Thanks for the advice! I'll keep you posted. Tonight he even managed to climb to the top of the roost to sleep! Picture shows why he won't fit in a dog crate!

He is beautiful! I hope he recovers!

Update on Harvey: Yesterday afternoon Husband got Harvey in a towel and I was able to force about 1/2 a scrambled egg and some chickens liquid vitamins in him. Even my 6'2" husband had a hard time holding him still and I didn't get all the egg in him. He seems a bit more awake today than he has been, but now he is exhibiting a behavior that really worries me. He tilts his head straight back and while back he shakes it from side to side. This is done in a very slow and gentle way, nothing severe in it at all. This cannot be good. He still will not eat, I tempt him many times a day, and I haven't seen him drink either. When we force fed him yesterday he didn't gag, or spit up or anything like that. He walked back into the run and went to bed on the top rung of the roost as usual. What does this new behavior mean, anyone know? :idunno

Could be because he's not eating and he's got vitamin deficiencies...the start of wry neck maybe.

Are you willing to learn how to tube feed him? Or is that a little too much.
