Harvey the Great is Dying. . .

Pics
I'm so sorry you are going through this. Do you know of anyone who can quickly and humanely take care of him using a hatchet and stump or broomstick method? It sounds like it's time... :hugs:hugs:hugs
Yes, I talked to husband about getting the hatchet nice and sharp. I can do it, in as much as I do not want to. I've done it before, but I was angry at that rooster for attacking and tearing up my son's legs, so it's been a long time. Just keep telling myself to wait just one more day, something may change , , , ,:fl:fl:fl:fl:fl:fl:fl

You and Harvey are on my mind. Did he pass or is he still with you?
Harvey is still with us. As a matter of fact he came out the coop this morning and stopped in front of (what I call) the baby waterer and stood drinking water all day! I even saw him poop! It was nothing to write home about, mostly water and a little yellow froth, but something is still functioning! I was very sneaky, I saw him drink early this morning and got my second baby waterer and filled it and put vitamins in it. While he dozed I changed it on him. He didn't know and drank vitamins all day! Just in case I put a dish of 20% finisher in front of him. Of course I couldn't watch him all day, so I don't know if he ate anything. I'm hopeful again now! :fl I really appreciate your good thoughts!

So sorry you are going through this with poor Harvey the Great, he is very beautiful. He may just be a chicken to some people but he is one of your babies. I am sure all of us here understand your feelings. :hugs
Yes, I have received so much support and advice here, I really appreciate it. It's nice to know there are folks that understand about feelings for animal pets! Thank you for your kind words!

I'm so terribly sorry for your impending loss.

I know it's probably too late and you've given up but did you try calling any local livestock veterinarians to see if they would see him. Our local livestock vet has a specific avian vet(although he's now retiring) -since chickens are actually considered livestock it makes sense. Also being a livestock vet things are usually cheaper.

I understand that money is an issue also I totally understand that you are feeling like now is time. I was just wondering if you had thought about it.

I hope you find peace for yourselves and for Harvey in whatever you decide.

We all know that this is a hard decision and that your decision will be in his best interest.
I called more than 10 vets. Sometimes I was referred to another vet. I'd call the referral vet and none of them see chickens. I really can't afford to travel and pay a vet too. Actually I can't afford a vet at all. So I am watching Harvey closely and when it's truly time I'll send him off myself. He drank water all day today and I did see him poop once. Maybe he'll start to eat too? I watched him for an hour and it was less than interesting. Just standing with his eyes closed and drinking. He didn't move from the water all day today. I'm sharpening the old hatchet and when It's time I'll be able to get my head in the right place to do the deed. I'll think mean thoughts about the mean rooster I used to have named Cody! Now Cody was a mean SOB! He attacked me and my dog grabbed him protecting me, he ran off with him and I never saw him again. I was not sorry either.

See post 114. Harvey hasn't eaten in 10 days and didn't drink either until today. I stuck food in front of him but can't watch all day, so I don't know if he ate.
I think Harvey is sneaking food behind your back.
;)

He actually doesn't look bad at all drinking above.
