has anyone ever tried to breed a PURPLE chicken

I purchased some day olds some time ago from a hatchery here in melbourne Australia.

I bought Black Australorp cross with New Hamshire chicks and when they feathered in at 6-8 week I noticed some of them had a purple sheen and the rest had green sheen.

I was told the ones with the purple sheen was the less desirable low quality bird.

I will go through my notes and see if I cant let you know why this was said.

I've been wondering about that, since hatchery's are less strict about culling birds with what's considered a fault..like the purple sheen and breeders have been working for quite a while to eradicate it...wouldn't that mean that for this particular project hatchery stock be easier to start out with? You'd have to breed with better quality stock later on of course for type and such but just for the purple sheen color it seems like it would be easier to start with stock thats been less stringently managed.

But I"m new to chickens and could be wrong lol

Chickens have pheomelanin (red) and eumelanin (black), that's it.

If you would get lavendergene into RIR you would get a pink chicken, in theory.

I bred boa constrictor morphs so i was using the the only color names I knew of. I was curious if they were the same based names for colors. Either way my principles are correct, especially the blue structural gene.

I have some speckled sussex/blue orp crosses that the male offspring have alot of purple. I thought I was seeing things even took pictures of them when they were just featherinig, pink, blue green, purple but it didn't show up on the picture very well. If I can find the pictures again I will post.

Even better: Tiny Pink Bantam chickens replace miniture dogs by socialites as the new vogue pet. Seen in carrier purses dressed in bling!

I think you are going to have some problems breeding back to type.....HA!

An old poem comes to mind:

I never saw a purple cow (or chicken)
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhow,
I'd rather see, than be one.

$200 says it won't work. Mahogany over gold with a diluting color like Lavender just makes for a buff type coloration, so you'll mainly have a bird with an orangey color and some Lavender leaking through, or a bird with a slight red or creamy yellow hint and Lavender coming through.

The best form of pink is likely with getting some mahogany red over white or splash in a Silkie, thus blurring the colors.

As for purple. . . Pretty sure it was said before, but all you need is a black chicken with poor quality feathering. Naturally they should be black with a green sheen, but poor growth can produce purple "bands" of color in the feather instead.
