Has anyone given Tramadol to a chicken for pain?

Metacam seems to be the gold standard for anti inflammatory and pain relief. I’m surprised it’s not working. Is the dosage like 2 ml twice a day?
Are you sure the limping is coming from the knee joint? Did the vet take the birds temperature? Oviduct infections can cause limping.

My favorite rooster went to live with a friend, because he was being persecuted here, and she had just lost her very similar rooster to a coyote. After about a year, I happened to see that she was giving away some chickens online, and when I inquired, my rooster was among them. (Grrrrrrr!)

Naturally, I asked for him back, and took the others, too. All of this leadup to say:. They all had awful leg mites. They limped, sort of, but it was more like a hobble than a limp. As if their own weight was painful to support. Their legs were red, as is your poor baby's, but their scales were not smooth. They stuck up, like raised hackles. This was apparently caused by the accumulation of dead skin and probably mite detritus. The remedy I found was to soak the legs and feet in warm sudsy (Dawn dish soap is good) water, until the scales and crud soften, like your fingernails do in the bath. Then, very gently, clear away as much of the crud as possible. Sometimes the scales come off too, which is ok I guess, so long as they fall off, vs being torn loose. Then, when this is done as well as possible, coat the legs and feet with pertoleum jelly. This helps the skin heal, and also smothers the mites. Repeat the petroleum jelly twice a day, and the soak twice a week, until the legs and feet heal.

Having written all of that, I have to tell you that your birds scales look normal to me, except for the redness. The scales don't seem raised at all.

Best of luck with this! I look forward to hearing what finally worked!

Since Metacam/Meloxicm was mentioned I thought I should point out that it comes in two strengths, 1.5 mg/ml and 0.5 mg/ml, so people need to be careful when recommended a dose.

The dose my vet had me use for an egg bound 4kg peahen was 0.7 ml of the 1.5 mg/ml stuff twice a day.
