Hatch-A-Long (May-June)

It isn't, we have hit a brick wall!!! I have one who has pipped ( is that a word?) one is rocking and 2 are evidently sleeping lol I want SOOOO badly to take the chicks out and put them in the brooder, but I'm not going to. I think one might have pasty butt...is that normal for a chick who is only a few hours old? I am worried about the one who pipped...only because I want to make sure the humidity is right over night. I am just happy I have 4/8 so far....first incubation, in a still air.

Your working yourself up. Everything you stated is pretty normal. i had an egg pip and not progress until a day and a half later. i think its a little early for pasty butt. Are you sure its not just left over egg material or left over waste?

Up to 5 chicks and another pip. It looked like dried poop on it's hinny, but haven't gotten a look at it this morning. They are all doing good, walking around giving their un-hatched brothers or sisters a roll. Hopefully sometime today they will all be hatched so I can get them out and inspect them.

Any update?

Oh dear...I hope he doesn't have pasty butt!

Up to seven babies, no pasty butt. I have one that I knew was going to give me a hard time hatching..if it is even still a live. The shell is very porous and I could never see the baby move inside of it. I could just barely see veins on lock down. I moved the first 6 very quickly to the brooder...humidity stayed up during moving them. Now I am just wondering how long to wait....it is the last egg. :/

6 of my babies, 7th still in the bator drying. He was really tired...pipped, zipped and hatched in less than 30 minutes.

@Kathryn, turkeys are something I want to try also. Do you keep them in a coop? are they hard to raise? Lots of questions about turkeys lol.
I'd like to try quail also...lol....I need more of a.....farm type home lol.

They can be more challenging than chickens for sure, but they are much friendlier and way fun. I got my Orloppe Bronze as day-olds and kept them in a brooder same as I would chicks. The only difference really is that they need a lot more space since they grow super fast and they have a higher protein requirement, but they do well on Turkey starter or game bird feed if you can't get turkey. Yeah, just a really high coop. It's about 4x6 and 5 high with a few roosts for them. They aren't using them yet though...
I keep them in a 6' high run and there's only one of them flies out to meet me everyday, but they're super easy to get back in since they like to stay together - more like sheep than birds really! This is my first time raising turkeys, but I've learned a lot and I'm really enjoying them.
Mine are now only 7ish weeks old and they're way bigger than my chickens already!

They're about 3 weeks in these pics and already getting huge!
Shh...s/he's sleeping....

And awake...

my husband doesn't know it yet but we are going to do turkeys next lol. I thought about getting one last week but I wanted to hatch my chicks first. Motherly instinct overwhelmed me and I gave in. I decided to go ahead make my way into the air sac. It was a quitter I am guessing....didn't look fully developed and there was a lot of runny yellowish stuff in it. Yolk was completely intact. I had read that porous eggs were hard to hatch. Buy Yayyyyy I have 7 babies. 7 out of 11 (2 of which weren't fertile) and I used a still air incubator, no turner.
