I candled the shipped Australorp eggs tonight. From the 2 dozen, I had a bunch arrive broken so couldn't use those. Then I found 2 more cracked ones. When I candled tonight I removed the ones that weren't developing, so now I am down to only 5 eggs of those.

Meanwhile, all 12 of the shipped White Breese eggs that I received are all doing good and developing.

This is going to be my last hatch until after Sept. I need a break. :gig

I hate that. That is such a shame and it is more often than not how the PO handles the package.
I had 12 olive eggers shipped to me and they arrived cracked and damage. 6 looked good. After a few days, 3 started weeping. I have 2 more of those weeping.
The incubator issues are adding to the issues with the eggs. Husband said to wait until the current eggs are done to get more eggs.

Looks like the eggs from my Ameraucanas are all doing alright (though one has a weirdly thick shell and is kind of hard to see into, but I think it's good)- but the darker eggs from my other birds are really a nuisance. I need a few more or brighter flashlights to figure out what's going on in there.
I put my cooking thermometer in the incubator as well and set the alarm on it to go off if it goes above a certain temperature- and I feel really glad that I did, since it went off in the middle of the night last night and I'm hoping I was able to get to it in time to stop the little eggs from being fried. :fl
I'm trying to figure out which of my older birds are getting turned into soup to make room for these new chicks (which hopefully hatch), so I've been stalking them when they make their egg laying song and taking a picture of their egg color and then putting a band on their leg. I swear one of these girls was a black giant, but the egg she lays is the color of a Black Copper Marans. I've been letting them hatch their own for so many years I'm afraid I have ended up with a lot of mixed breed chickens with black feathers.

Don't have to worry about which birds to go. Had a raccoon get into the pen and killed a couple of the birds last night.

Well, even if I don't have many of these shipped Australorp eggs hatch out, it will give me time to build mine back up, and to be working with my planned project bird in the meantime.

Aw shoot, that's heartbreaking. I hate coons. We just had a hunting party, got 10 in just a couple hours. Nasty things we're attacking my dogs too!
I hope they leave you guys alone :hit losing chickens to predators is the worst

Eventually, we will have only Jersey Giants and Dorking chickens. I am planning on Black Spanish turkeys, Silver Appleyard ducks, and Pilgrim geese.

We did figure out that the electric was grounding out which is how the raccoon managed to get in. ALl fixed now so I will see if it comes back.
