Hatch-Along - Eggs set in November, due December, anyone?

Hi, I have 18 Ameraucana eggs due to hatch on 12/13. I ordered them on ebay and my friend is hatching them for me. We both got chicken crazy about the same time last spring and she has gone into it big time and has a 400 egg incubator. I guess I'll have to go over this week and see if she can candle them for me. It has been interesting looking at the pics on this thread.
I have a broody banty that is sitting on eggs and one of those hatched today about 4 days after the first one hatched. She also has three other little chicks that were incubator hatched and I put in with her.

Wow, four days after the first one hatched? That's interesting. Usually they all hatch on the same day. Congrats on the hatches!

I have a batch due Dec 14. 19 Welsummer, 5 Ameraucauna, 6 barred rock X Buff Orpington Candled a few last night and there are some babies in there ;-) Will candle all of them at 10 days and pull any obvious duds.

I meant by staggered hatch is you will have a break in the hatching and you will get the joy at the first hatch and when the rest hatch you get the joy again. and thanks for reminding me the earth is supposed to end, I won't get to see my babies either.

Who here is planning on using some of their chickens for food? I told my husband that the ones I have now are safe, but thinking about growing our own chickens and I really want to raise a couple of turkeys for holiday dinner next year. But if the earth ends then I won't have to worry about this will I. I wish I knew if it would so I could quit paying my bills.

hahahahaa fun to read everyones' posts. and excited to see any pictures of the setup/candling and then most prizing, the pictures of the chicks

please share people!!!

snowpetals and 3D what I have read about hairline cracks is that you should seal it with some non-chemical glue.... that is for preventing the bacteria to enter... but if you are washing hands before handling, maybe its ok. You should read a little about it to be safe and please share too.

katsdar I currently have no plans of using them for food, but I eat they eggz daily

Long story-the banty went broody so put a few eggs under her over next few days, then had a salmon favorelle go broody a few days later so put some eggs under her over next few days. I had them both in a brooder pen. After two weeks SF decides heck with all this sitting, kicks some eggs out which I don't find until a couple days later as they are behind the bucket. I let SF out of brooder and put remaining eggs under the banty. So she was sitting on 10 eggs various size/colors. One hatches ot my great surprise and it is a banty. Then I have 3 bantys chicks that my friend with the incubator had hatched for me two days before. I put one of them in with broody banty to see if she will accept it and she does, so I put the other 2 in there the next day. Then this morning I was checking the eggs when banty was up and saw one had pipped! So it hatched today, a little leghorn/banty mix (the rooster is a banty). These bantys I have are less than a year old, hatched last spring from eggs laid by feral bantys that live at a biker bar near us. They have been a ton of fun.
