Listen to Christmas music and think positive thoughts. That's pretty much what I'm doing right now. lol That is just so weird... Did something unseen go wrong? Maybe you should check your incubators...?

snowpetals I hope

gabrielle I hope its not, and my incubator is of the same styrofoam that I used in this tray.

Lapaysanne it's definitely a meat spot, embryo that small would still be on the yolk and with some veins structure, anyway you saved your cookie dough

rgv too much loss and interesting theory.... I hope we did not have a lunar eclipse

exactly my thoughts 3D for a first timer like me, the success of this hatch means a lot

I have 50 eggs that i set a week and a half ago tonight I candle them. They are due the 31st of December or the first. I set them so they would hatch on News Years day. This isn't my first go but I did build my incubator and it works better then my store bought one. I hatched all last winter all the way through until about 2 months ago and them I quit so the incubator could get repairs done on it and get a good cleaning. I have three shelves and had eggs hatching at least once a week. So it got a touch up clean but do to the fact that I still had eggs going I couldn't clean clean it. I cleaned it and done the repairs and started all over again. I can't wait until these hatch. I got 3 dozen eggs from the lady that got our only Blu, Black, Splash Orpington Rooster and he is like 30 pounds so I can't wait to see what his off spring will be. I hope you have a good hatch.

we had 2 power outages during the incubation period but then again the temp was able to maintain itself on the 96+ degrees for a couple of hrs but again that happens pretty often and i've never had such a low rate....my best rate with my incubator was 100 percent back in february when i had just built my bator after that i've got down to about 75-80 percent eventhough the power goes out....

OMG !!!! I candeled 2 eggs and I see a mass little but it's in there, now I have brown eggs and so I didn't see a lot of veins, but it is only day 5. The air cell is really small but thats ok right, I need to check that pic that is on here that shows the air cell size. I may need to see a shrink after all this.

Gabrielle I think you will be fine. I never worried about my kids like this that I could remember.

3D so on the topic of chicken genetics, I have seen pics of what my chickens will look like grown up, father a RIR and mom a Buff Orphington so does that make a sex link? and if my understanding of a sex link is that you can tell what sex they are by color of chick. If so any ideas on what my boys and girls will look like?

I just prevented a really gross thing from happening, I was making cookies, and I usually crack the egg open right into the mixer, but something told me not to this time. Cracked the egg into a bowl, and turns out theres a little embryo inside

. I'm so glad I didn't mix it into the cookie batter.. I got some pics tho!

The big splotchy thing is just part of the bowl lol.

Can anyone tell me if this IS a embryo?
I could see eyes I think..
Not an embryo, just a blood spot.

rgvchicks, That is still weird. Maybe it hurt them more because they were at more important stages in development? >.>

Katsdar, I just looked up about black sex links (red sex links are different from black) and it said that to make a black sex link, you breed a rhode island red rooster with a barred plymouth rock hen. Then the males have a "faded barred with light coloured neck hackle feathers" and the females would be pure black with red mixed into their neck feathers. I don't think it would work with orpingtons...

Does sort of look like one they are usually curled a little more and i think more white that small..Could be some slough off from the hen though
I always crack mine seperate as i cant stand to have that piece of blood dot you get someitmes in my eggs. Grosses me out. I also take off the white things on ehac end that hold the yolk in the egg so it doesnt bang around. forgot the name calius challa ? not sure
