Hatch-Along - Hatching GS Barred / Blue Plymouth Rock Prize Eggs from Easter Hatch-along Natural Egg Photo contest

IT'S HATCH DAY!!!

There are now 6 pips in the incubator, INCLUDING one of the Prize Rock eggs!

The EE egg that pipped at the wrong end yesterday morning has popped up another piece of shell next to the original pip, so it looks like it will be ok on its own! Yay! There are three more EE eggs in the incubator that have pipped, and one Olive Egger, plus the Rock egg.

AND...One of the three EE eggs under the broody has HATCHED, and it is the most ADORABLE silvery gray and white fluffy cheeked chick!!!

Another egg under her has pipped too.

So many EGG-citing things happening!!! I will update later with pictures as things progress.

I am so happy for you!!!

Here is a quick update -

There are two more pips on the Prize Rock eggs!!! One small one at the right end of the egg, and another egg pipped a rather large piece of shell off at the WRONG end! I hope it will be ok!

The EE eggs are progressing slowly. There are now 4 EE's working at their little prison shells in the incubator, and one Olive Egger. No Delawares have externally pipped yet, as far as I can tell.

Sorry, but I can't get any decent pictures of the pipped eggs through the incubator windows.

BUT, I do have a couple of pictures of the ADORABLE little EE chick that hatched out under the broody hen!

Awww!

Poofy Cheeks!!

Camera Shy!!

Hopefully there will be lots more cuteness to post today!!!

What a sweety that EE is. I just love puffy, fluffy cheeks. Keep an eye on the one that pipped on the wrong end. Is there an air hole poked through the membrane? This is so exciting!!!

Oh my goodness!!!! THREE chicks just hatched in the incubator!!! Two more EE's and one of the Rocks!! It was the first one that pipped at the right end. It did a perfect, classic zip all the way around the top end and popped the top off. I think it is a BLUE!!!! My sister used her better camera and got some pictures through the incubator window, so I will try and post pictures soon!!! A fourth EE is zipping as I type. AHHHHH!!!!

Ok... PICTURES!!!

Here is the First EE that hatched in the Incubator...

And here is the fully zipped Rock egg...

Pushing, pushing...

And OUT!

Or, at least, halfway out...

Pictures of the dried off chicks to come later...

Here you go... pictures of the first blue rock chick all fluffed out, sleeping on the thermometer in the brooder with her three EE friends.

The Fourth EE is out and in the brooder, and one of the Olive Eggers just hatched!!! It is from our one Blue Copper Maran hen and the EE (splash?) rooster. It looks like another BLUE!!!

Zipping out...

Here She is!!!

I am sure there will be more updates to come soon!

Well, the first sad note to this hatch. I am afraid we lost the wrong end pipped Rock egg.

I had checked it shortly after I noticed to make sure there was a hole in the membrane, but I don't know how long after it had pipped that was, and when I peeled back the membrane a little later on because it wasn't moving at all, I could barely see the tip of a beak deep in the crack, and it was not moving. I wondered if it might have pipped a vein too, because there was blood on the membrane when I first noticed the shell pipped off. SO frustrating that it got this far, only to fail because of a malpositioning problem!!

On a happier subject, the other Rock egg that had pipped in the right end is now properly zipping and should be breaking out soon!

There is also a large pip in one of the Delaware eggs finally, and there are two more EE eggs with pips.

I have to keep reminding myself that day 21 does not end until tonight and not to panic if all the eggs have not pipped by now!

Will keep you all updated.
