Hatch-Along - Setting eggs 4/25!! Anyones Else? Hatch date May 16th

I'll follow along with ya'll. I set 54 various marans and NH x on 4/29. I culled 6 on my day 7 candling and lost one yesterday as it was a "stinker". I'll be doing my 14 day candling later tonight. I'm due for hatching the 19th, but historically my hatches are usually starting on day 20.
I'm using a homemade bator that made it through a house fire we experience at the end of last summer. When I initially cleaned it up and plugged it in I wasn't sure it would work. We were told it got 1200+ degrees in the house, but I guess the styrofoam protected the thermo as it is working just fine. It kind of smelled like the fire initially so I sprayed the inside down with lysol while it was getting to temp. It seems to be doing just fine.
good luck to everybody on their hatches.

I do not know if I should expect a May hatch or a June hatch. I bought my broodie silkie 6 fertilized eggs from Fl. I live in PA. So I know these eggs were laid about 7 days ago. What I don't know is if it will take 21 days of Alan sitting on them or if it will take 14 because of when they were laid.

This is new for me. I have 3 silkies I got as chicks last June, and it is the best thing I ever did!

What do you all think about when I might expect babies?

Thanks!
Sherry

Hey Sherry-
If you just received your shipped eggs you should let them rest in a carton with the fat end up for a day, and during that time you make sure your incubator is holding temp good.
It will take 21 days from when they get up to temp and stay there.
Best of luck to you. Just a small amount of time poking around this site you will find everything you need to know.

Day 17 for my 15 barnyard mix. Putting them on lockdown tonight due to I have to work long shifts the next couple days. Candled about half still see slight movement and veins. Can't wait until Thursday Just hope some hatch. But I noticed a white ring on shell of one egg on side up close to air pocket. Does this mean anything? First time excitement building along with worry

Just did my 14th day candling and only culled 3. My air cells are small, I think the natural humidity in the air has worked against me. I think I'm going to put some rice in a bowl and change it each time I turn them as well as leave the vents open till lockdown. Any body else fight this in styro bators?
My air cells are way too small, and look closer to what the 7 day should look like. I have 44 chicks looking good to hatch, and now I have to counteract drowning them. I'm going to use the rice the next few days, and I think I'm going to make each egg a cup or ring to hatch in so they will stay with the air up by their head. I'm just tore about it. At least they are due to start hatching on a Saturday when I'll be here. I've learned quite a bit about getting chicks out of the shell with this old home made thing. Things I'm changing for this hatch is absolutely every chick once fluffy is coming out, the pips will remain up in position, and I'm putting some anti fog on my glass so I can see what the world is going on in there.

Thank you. I guess I messed up then because I don't even have an incubator. I did let them sit for a bit, but then I just put them under Alan. Darn it. I guess I will find out if my mistake cost me the chicks or not in a few weeks.

I set 31 eggs on the 25th as well. 14 Black Marans ... cant tell if they're good or not after the first week because the shells were so dark and 17 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. They look like they're about 75% viable. My kids cant wait for the peeps coming from inside the shells before they hatch. They think that a "cheep cheep" coming from inside of an egg is the funniest thing ever.

LOL... I didn't understand you had a broody hen. You don't have to do anything but wait the 21 days from when she took them over. So sorry for the assumption.
