Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Sounds like you need a top for your brooder. At least you know your chicks have imprinted on you though. "MOM! MOM! MOM! DON'T LEAVE ME!!! MOM! LET ME IN!!!"

Haha yes we added a lid...which they are not happy about. They give it the stink eye all the time and we have a few chicks that as soon as that lid comes off they are already trying to fly out!

So we eventually want to move the chicks to the garage....how old should they be for that? Since it is drafty in there
As long as you have adequate heat they can go any time. If it's staying above 40F & they are feathered on wings & chest they can go now. I tossed mine out in the coops in April last year with no lamps at 3-4 weeks old.

Borrowed LG Hatch for 3/9 finished , apparently the temp spike on day 16 took out about half of them : (

Survivors are:

8 CL of which only 2 are girls
This is not a great pic, but it was really interesting that the 2 girls hatched side by side at EXACTLY the same time
and at EXACTLY day21+2 hrs

All 8 CL - the 6 w/ yellow head dots being the boys

and 7 SFH - looks like on is going to be creasted

I've got 9 EE or Maran Roo over mis. pure breeds in LD now, Day 21 tomorrow...
They were the 1st group in the 2nd LG...
then more small groups every few days into april.

Our two chicks are 5 weeks old today!!! Here's what they look like! Can we tell gender yet????
This is Obie = Golden Lakenvelder

This is Harper = Blue Laced Red Wyandotte

Is your garage insulated? If it's not insulated, it's almost the same as putting them out in the coup with a light. So if they will be in the garage with now source of heat and it's not insulated I would say they need to be fully feathered. I know chickens don't like drafts full stop. They can handle a much cooler temperature as long as it's not drafty. Hope that helps

Oh my goodness! How cute! I will have to post some pic's of mine from the first hatch. My Uncle took 8 of the chicks and we only kept 5. All of ours are white with some Columbian Wyandotte feathering leaking through in the hackles and tail. But they are growing so fast! They have caught up in feathering and size to chicks that are 3 weeks older than them! I think most of them are Columbian Wyandotte x Buff Orpington. They are all super friendly, even though I think at least 3 of the 5 are roos!

The second one in a little rooish. It's hard to tell in the picture, but is it's comb starting to turn pink? Other than that they look like pullets to me :).
