Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Hey, I used my BATHTUB for a brooder !
I can hear Jeff Foxworthy say, "You know you're a redneck if...you use your bathtub for a chick brooder !" LOL
But it works very well, if you put enuf newspaper or paper towels down in it first. I actually had to switch to using wood shavings, because they started to eat the paper. (Seems they ALL do that, at around 3 weeks of age.) But first I put plastic wrap over the drain, and taped down / sealed all the edges of the plastic. Don't want a wood-shaving clogged drain !

I hope this was the spare bathroom. I would hate to have to move chicks to take a shower.

May I suggest an inexpensive Humidity Indicator, available @ Wal-Mart for $8.95...since I have started using that, my hatches turn out GREAT ! No more protruding "belly-buttons" and chick deaths. i keep ther humidity at about 50% for the first 18 days, then kick it up to about 70% for the last 3 days. works like a charm !

Too funny !
Yes, we have two bathrooms, and of course it is not the bathroom we use to take our showers !
I even took some pix, but not sure how to post them on this Backyard Chickens forum thing...I tried, but got back something that said I did not have permission. Say WHAT !!??

I think you have to have like 20 posts before you can post pix.

I also notice it doesn't list my flock, or anything lke it does for you...whatev...

Hey, does anyone know where I can get some PUREBRED Swedish Flower chicks or hatching eggs ? A "certain farm" is offering some that are "crested." They must be crossing them, because SF are not a crested breed, to my knowledge. But maybe I am wrong ?? I know some farms have been known to cross things, and sell them as purebreds. To me, that is VERY unethical....maybe they figure since they are not yet accepted by the APA, it is ok to do that. Personally, I do not agree with that line of thinking, but that is my own opinion.
Anyway, I am looking for SF purebreds, not crosses, so if anyone knows where I can get some, please send me a PERSONAL reply, as I do not go on my Backyard Chickens Forum very often. Thanks !

We sometimes use the bathtub for a brooder too. I remember when I was a kid, there were these flowers that you touch the tip and they pop wide open (wild forgetmenots?) andway, after a while the chicks pop right up and out. lol We do what we can!

You have to edit your signature on your profile page to get everything to show up like mine does. I also have a Gold Feather membership which allows me to put even more stuff (my ads, extra links) in my siggy. Thinking you may need 20 posts to do that as well.

Actually, they are a landrace breed & some are crested some are not. Of the 7 I hatched recently 2 appear that they will have small crests. My hatching eggs came from CarolJ here on BYC.
I had a temp spike and lost many eggs from that incubator but got 50% on the SFH and those 7 which hatched have been robust healthy birds. This is at a couple days old.
