Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Ok, thanks for the info.
I know they are a landrace breed, but had only seen the crested ones available thru' one farm...and this is the same farm that DID outcross/ crossbreed some nice imported chickens with hatchery chickens, SUPPOSEDLY of the same breed. The resulting offspring was not colored like they were supposed to be, by the S.O.P. So I don't entirely trust them...know what I mean ? And since they charge an arm and a leg for day-old, unsexed chicks, I want to be sure of what I am getting.
I intensly dislike crested chicks, anyway; I think they look dorky as all heck. But that's just ME. Everybody likes something different. I am just not a crested breed fan... Nope; NOT AT ALL.
So, WHO is "CarolJ" ?? Is she NPIP Certified ? Does she have a website / email ??? How do I get ahold of her ?? Can you send her info to me, or have her contact me directly ? Thank you !!

I'm having troubles keeping the bators temp even. I've come to the conclusion that it's finally starting to warm up outside so temps are fluctuating inside. I actually think temps stayed even when outside temps were colder. Who would have thunk it? Temps got up to to 102 I one incubator maybe for hours 2 days ago. Sunday we go into lock down. Out of 50 eggs only 3 looked like they weren't happening. (Before the 102) I finally took the 11 chicks out on the porch. They have a heated box to get in to but a nice pen to run around in (unheated). I removed the heat lap out of the box and replaced it with a 75 watt bulb. They seem to be doing ok. I'm running out of room. 2 separate pens and an incubator in the small bathroom. An incubator and dog crate with poults in the spare bedroom. DH is starting to complain.
I have my incubator inside of an open cardboard box. It really helps to maintain the temperature and I have fewer fluctuations. I take it out of the box during lockdown so there is better air circulation. I used this method when I hatched out 86% but it sounds like whatever you are doing is working! You should have lots of chicks soon!

Actually, they are a landrace breed & some are crested some are not. Of the 7 I hatched recently 2 appear that they will have small crests. My hatching eggs came from CarolJ here on BYC.
I had a temp spike and lost many eggs from that incubator but got 50% on the SFH and those 7 which hatched have been robust healthy birds. This is at a couple days old.

They are so cute! I love their coloring!

we were finally able to take our two 8 week old chicks outside today...they lovedit!!!!!! although our barred rock hen did not like them very much. a couple good pecks from her lol but all our other girls seemed to be okay with them. they are pooped theyve been sleeping since they came Home LOL

They'll be seasoned travelers in no time! Glad they did well, expect a few pecks from the other hens... they are just making sure the youngsters don't get any bright ideas about their place in the pecking order! LOL... ours do the same thing to Gracie's babies, but the little ones quickly learn who to avoid and how to get around the other hens.

lol obie def didnt learn his lesson yet with the whole pecking...he kept going right back to peggy, our barred rock, but she is def at the top of the pecking order so she would set him straight. harper followed us around everywhere and when she got pecked or scared of something she would hide behind our legs. peggy kpt making these like low clucking noises the entire time theywere out...not sure why but it was kinda funny though

The low clucking noise sounds like what a broody hen does when talking to little ones.... Barred rocks are known to go broody sometimes, so maybe her instincts were at war. If he kept going back to her it may have been because the sounds she was making sounded like a mother hen would sound.
Try placing a few fake eggs in one of your nest boxes, you never know... you may end up with one of your hens going broody for you! That would be awesome!

lol huh we thought she didnt like them but maybe it was just the opposite. we actually just took out the fakes eggs we had in there so they knew where to lay caue they just started not too long ago and our older welsummer i think actually was going broody cause she stopped laying for about two weeks and we did catch her collecting eggs and also straw but she would never stay on the fake ones long enough so we took them out and she started laying. i would love for one of the hens to go broody lol

You're going to have a yard full! Can't wait to see more pics! We are anxiously waiting for someone else to go broody! We would love some more little ones but guess we can wait for a while.
Still needing a couple breeds to round out our breeding stock for meaty egg mixers.
