Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

This is what having a bad hair day really feels like.
Haha totally! Very cute

Im also planning another batch shortly after these hatch out. I have a rotation going on. I have the small brooder in the bathroom can hold them until 3-4 weeks of age then the big brooder in the garage can hold them until 8-9weeks of age and then a grow out pen outside to house them untill they get sold, move into a permenant coop, or go to freezer camp. I have a batch of chicks in my bathroom brooder moving out to the garage this weekend to make room for the new ones thatll hatch in 8 days. So as long as I keep up a rotation I think I can feed my addiction. hopefully I dont get overrun with poultry

. My husband makes fun of me and says im like a crazy cat lady only with chickens.

This is probably what I'll be like soon ....

OK people. Where does everyone like to order their hatching eggs from? We want to order some hatching eggs soon. These are the breeds we would like to get: Silkies (any color), Buckeyes, Salmon Faverolles, Dominiques, and Ameraucanas. We don't really care if they are show lines or not. We just like adding color and variety to our backyard flock :).

Also, when cleaning a styrofoam incubator should you just use antibacterial soap and water or something stronger?

So happy to hear of everyone's eggs moving right along. I am down to 7/10 now and so far most look good, as far as I can tell. The dark masses have gotten so big I can't really see anything but that and the air sac. So, pretty sure it going to be wait and see from this point.

Now I gave a slight delima...I had ordered eggs to be shipped and well, they will be here tomorrow. I have read to either let the eggs sit a day or two or put them in the bator in an egg carton and do not turn for 2 to 3 days...is that right and is there anything else I need to know or do w shipped eggs? My delima though is, I only have one bator and will be on days 12, 13, and 14 with the ones I have in there. Advice please? Oh and one other question, can I put a paper towel or paper plate under the eggs when I go into lock down to try and save some of the clean up, from hatching or is that not advisable?

I posted this earlier in the thread when someone asked about staggered hatch. Here it is again for you:

Keep humidity as low as possible for as long as possible. Keep turning eggs not in lockdown until you hear peeping or see an external pip. Stop turning & raise humidity. Use a spray bottle of hot water to lightly mist the inside of the lid of the bator to instantly jump humidity by 10-20%. DO NOT add water to the wells in the bottom of the bator!!!! Add a bowl or sponges to raise humidity so they can be removed as soon as hatch completes. Allow all babies to hatch & gain their feet. Remove babies & water bowl or sponges as soon as all babies are upright & moving. Even if they are not completely dry remove them. They will finish drying under the heat lamp. Just make sure there are no drafts. Allow excess humidity to escape & drop back to incubation range. Continue turning remaining eggs until they reach lockdown point. Repeat process for next batch of babies.

I have Silkies, Cochins & Old English Game Bantams & can get the Rainbow layers that I've got set now for you as well if you are looking for eggs.

Incubator cleaning: I squirt a dab of dishsoap & a splash of bleach in mine & run it full of hot water in the shower, let sit over night & rinse with hot water.

How much do you charge for silkie and cochin eggs, and what colors do you breed? you can pm if you dont want to post here.

I just lost a Silkie roo so pens will be changing, but I have assorted colors. Cochins are a mixed flock as well but I may be able to get pure mottleds since I have a trio. I'll have to separate them out. Silkies are just starting back to laying after our move & Cochins are still on strike. It will likely be closer to spring before everyone is back to laying well. They don't like to be moved, especially in winter.

Today I did the second set of weigh-ins, and so far it looks as though the dry(er) incubation method is the better one for attaining optimum weight loss. I needed to add a small amount of water to the incubator after week one to slow the process, but that was a tiny adjustment. It is hard to watch something you believe to be in danger, and to refrain from intervention for the sake of knowledge. My gut tells me that the dryer set of eggs will do better, but there's always the chance that I'll be wrong. However, I'm a worry-wart :p so hopefully I'll get at least 3 hens out of 21 eggs.

We candled tonight, and had to pull three more Marans, and one orphington egg. one was clear, but the other three had only the faintest of red, and had gone bad.
That leaves 18 marans eggs for me, and about a dozen (give or take) of the golden cuckoo orphington eggs for Jill.

Here's hoping we all have every egg hatch that we've kept till now!
