Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Acck! My post didn't seem to go through yesterday! We had one overacheiver out first thing yesterday! She (think positive) is for sure from my Light Brahama she's got feathed feet. Not sure who daddy is she's all yellow. As of this morning we have 5 more out and a bunch of pips! Wheeeee!

Update - I now have 6 chicks wreaking havoc in the incubator. I've got a new brooder set up that needs a thermometer before I'll trust it with the new babies, but also have a few more eggs that are pipped in there so I'm leary about trying pull the dry chicks out and my first casualty :( I've been using a bastor to add water to the washcloth I put in the other day to up the humidity, but don't want to 'shrink wrap' anyone either, especially with the other 12 eggs that aren't due to hatch until next weekend......I don't think I'll do that to myself again, live and learn -no more staggered hatches for the rookie.

If an egg pipped over 24 hours ago and you can see the beak & the chick is still breathing - how much longer do you leave it alone before assisting/checking to make sure it isn't shrink wrapped?

So our humidity today is being very touchy..we don't have any pips yet is it safe to quickly open up the bator and put a towel in? We just can't get the humidity to stay up...any suggestions???

Thanks Brooster! I thought about getting a Brinsea, but couldn't find a dealer in my region. I ordered a Hovabator Genesis (updated in 2012) with egg tray when I ordered my spring chicks. It says all you have to do is plug in, add water, then eggs, and you're done! I enjoyed this experience, but could get used to doing a little less work!

Yeah, getting more chicks, lol!

Best of luck to all of you! May all your eggs hatch & be happy & healthy!

I'm glad you were able to find an incubator, that was my trouble as well! I did eventually get a Brinsea, shipped from http://www.cbotkin.ca/ , a company out in western Canada. I'm still on the fence about ordering an octa20.

I was checking my eggs which looked pretty darn lifeless when...I heard a peep *gasp* Today is day 22 for us. So I quickly refilled all the water containers and backed away from the incubator!

Most of the first chicks out in my hatches take 24 hours from pip to hatch. This one from this hatch took 25 and a half hours! I could see tho he piped a vein. I think if it doesn't start to zip soon you could look into helping.

Yes I would go ahead and toss in a wet towel. What is your humidity at?
well the lady that gave us the eggs said she keeps it at 55-60 for lockdown and its been good the last two days at staying between them but not its dropping like this morning it was 52 and it seems like i just cant get it up past 55 now

Also, some of you may recall at the start of this thread I noted our fridge went out. We just got an auto call about replacement delivery & They Had The Wrong Delivery Address!! This keeps happening, (packages & mail go missing) & we finally know why:
Our part of the street is just the street name, farther down the road splits & those are street-name "east" & "west". Apparently ALL the electronic auto fill address systems, like google maps are AUTO FILLING "EAST" into our Address, b/c there IS one w/ the same street # as our place. I'm sooo frustraighted. (The ppl who live at that address have criminal histories, so when our stuff gets delivered there it is gone for good -- they say they never got it, the delivery ppl say we delivered as addressed, not our problem.) I can't figure out any way to fix this problem -- I want to buy some hatching eggs of certain breeds this spring, but I'm afraid they will get sent to that other house. I have no idea what to do...

Have you contacted your post master to discuss the issue you have with all of your mail going missing? Not to be mean or anything but if the folks that keep getting and accepting your mail/deliveries knowing full well it isn't theirs is the same as stealing IMO,last I knew stealing someone's mail was a crime with sentence attached to it. Wish you luck with your hatch, and I like the idea of having them hold your shipments at the post office for you to pick up the special items like eggs. My mail carier likes to toss things up on the front deck and run so there is no way I can order eggs/chicks and have them sent to my home.

Do you have an old turkey bastor (long plastic thing w/the rubber ball on the end to squeeze up liquid) - I've got a wash cloth underneath one of the larger holes in the lid and am using it to add warm water to the washcloth to up the humidity w/out having to open it up. (I've got an LG and the tip of it fits into the large hole on the top.) Maybe it will help?
