Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

'm sure it's been posted somewhere but exactly how long after setting eggs do they start to vein. I have 3 out of 11 that have been in the bator over a week and have wonderful veins and some movement. The other 8 have absolutely nothing. Are they not viable? Thanks. Sue

It really depends on the color of the shells how soon you can see something. White/cream shells can reveal development at 2-4 days. Light to medium brown shells take 5-10 days. Chocolate, blue, green or olive may never reveal anything more than a darkening mass or a more defined air cell. I never toss anything before 10 days, usually closer to 18 for dark or colored eggs. If there is any doubt at all it goes into lockdown.

In my limited experience, by day 10 I was able to tell which eggs were fertile and which weren't. On the darker eggs I waited to toss any until day 18 before lockdown. This time around when I was candling I was able to see extensive veining by day 7, and the non-fertile ones were very obvious by comparison. My eggs are very easy to candle though. Today is day 14 for me so I will be candling again and probably tossing the ones I think are infertile now. I don't want to risk an explosion in the bator .

Our first broody hen has been sitting on her eggs for 21 days today! I hope a couple hatch for her. She has been a very diligent sitter. Unfortunately, it has been snowing all day. Not the best weather for hatch day . I hope they do alright. I haven't heard any peeping yet.

OK so it is only day 5 on LG#1 (41 eggs set)

but I just HAD to check some fertility, really for the person I got some eggs from.
I'm doing cartwheels of joy -- I have veining , picture perfect veining in many many eggs
(I didn't check all 41 but checked about 30, found all but 8 w/ veining).

So what's growing you wonder ...
SFH !!!! I've been soooo wanting these
CL - yes, the eggs are amazingly uniform lustrous blue, sorta tealish blue, not robins egg, but just lovely color
EE - won't know what they'll lay until they lay, but should be a rainbow
SQ/H Buckeye - eggs from my new Trio - not so great only the 1st 2 Hen eggs have veins, therefore Mr Buckeye has not done his job since he arrived at my place...gonna have to have a little talk w/ them tomorrow, I am putting every egg they lay in a bator I need chicks...

In LG#2 - set 2/19 & 2/20
12 - EE , Ame & Maran Roo over several diff. hens
10 - EE , Mutt EE Roo over a barnyard assortment
2 - Buff Orp
3 - Speckled Sussex
1 - Cochin banty 50% chance from the frizzle hen
3 - my own mystery eggs*

* There is a Jr EE mutt Roo & a Sizzle Roo in w/ Lady Black, ( mix of game & Jap. banty hen), but I swear I thought she laid white eggs last year, and the eggs I'm finding are light brown, so are they hers? or is one of 6 pullets squeezing around the divider to lay in her quite corner of the divided coop?? and if so which of 3 Roos is the chick-daddy? so what hatches out of those eggs will be a mystery....

It's about time! Out of the first doz I bought (via mail/Silkies) 1 had a peck in it, 8 show nothing and 3 have serious veining and movement. The 2nd doz only set 5 days ago, some have a little veining. It was too early, really, to tell but it looks like at least half are veining. Not exactly sure what these are. (White Leghorns I believe, potentially going to lay blue eggs) Can't wait, can't wait.






It looks like the Marans is Daddy to 3 of the 4. I have 1 chipmunky EE.

Oh exciting! What kind of chicken and what kind of eggs?

The broody is a columbian wyandotte. She seems to have done a very good job so far. I hope something hatches for her. I haven't been outside yet this morning to see if I can hear any peeping coming from under mama. We have a columbian wyandotte rooster and the hens are red sex links, black sex links, speckled sussex, buff orpington, welsummer, and rhode island red. It will be interesting to see what colors we get. Last hatch was sort of disappointing. 85% of the chicks were yellow. We thought we might get more variety with all the colors in our flock. We might not hatch anymore eggs out until we have another rooster to add to mix or get rid of our current one. (He can be a mean sucker!). Next year should be much more interesting color wise. We have chicks in the brooder of various breeds right now. Dominique's, Marans, EE's, and ameraucana/silkie crosses. I think I have caught the crazy chicken addict disease! Well, I guess I'm ready to head outside and brave the storm and all the ice, yikes!
