Hatch along!!!! setting january 11-15!!!

both my Rhodebar eggs have veining! I'm having a hard time keeping the humidity where I want it. Tomorrow is actually day 7, so they'll all get weighed, candled, and the aircells marked. Hopefully they haven't lost too much weight yet. 2 more weeks until chicks!

I candled, weighed and marked the air cells of the 20 eggs that are on day 7. Averaged out, they are on right where they should be for weight loss. There are 2 that have possible blood rings, and 1 clear. I kept them all in since none where smelly or weepy. I'll check those ones again in a couple of days.

I candled the ones that are on day 5 too, since the incubator was open. 4 still had rolling air cells, so I left those in the non-turning spots. My solo cream legbar egg has veins, but most of the rest are too dark for me to see anything yet.

Excited!

I candled all my eggs again last night I'm down to 12 eggs left out of 25 :( and I'm pretty sure the 2 eggs under my broody aren't any good but I'm gonna hold out hope. I have a feeling the eggs got too scrabbled during shipping. most of the yolks when i cracked open the ones that looked clear or wrong were all broken up.:( I'm sure some more of the bcm eggs aren't good as well but the ones left are too dark for me to see anything so they stayed. Hope everyone else incubation is going better :)

Out of my original 12. One was broken. 5 others are clear on day 12. 2 quit(Large blood ring. no veins and embryo stopped developing.weeping.) 4 are still hanging in there. One is in a very small egg for a Delaware. Hope it's a proportionately petite chicken (at least until hatch day). Had my humidity at around 55, but my air cells are pretty small for day 12. Gonna just let it drop for a while and monitor the cells. On an up note the babies seem very vigorous in their shells. It's just so amazing to see!

So the higher the humidity, the smaller the cells? I candled mine yesterday and couldn't see air cells. I don't have a monitor in for humidity, just temp. Did I kill them? I candled on day 5 and saw nothing. This is my second hatch batch. I had a good turnout with my first... 75% hatch rate, but this one.....?

The eggs need to lose weight during incubation i cant remember how much but the air cell needs to get larger the closer the egg is to hatching so the chick doesn't drown when it internally pips before pipping the shell. did you see movement? how far are you in incubation?

hope this pic helps

They're supposed to lose between 11-13% of their weight. You weigh them before you set them, then again at 7 days, 14 days and before lockdown.

As an example:

an egg weighs 60 grams at day 0. 60g * 0.13 = 7.8g. The egg should lose about 7.8 grams before lockdown. 7.8 grams /18 days = 0.433 grams a day.

So, at day 7, the egg should weigh 60 g - (0.433 g * 7 days) = 60 g - 3.03 g = 56.97 g.

make sense?

Yup! Thank you!

I didn't weigh them when they went in :(

I drained all the water out of the bator. I hope that helps, I'll add a tiny bit of water tomorrow, but I'm so worried I drowned them... (sigh) It doesn't look like there are ANY veins in ANY of them, and it's day 6...

I don't think you can drown them in 6 days. In some of my eggs I couldn't see any veins until today, which is 10. As hard as it is, let them be for a couple of days, and then candle.
