Hatch along!!!! setting january 11-15!!!

Help? I went to do lockdown and candled. It looked like completely nothing, so I cracked an egg... then another, then another. They ALL looked like this A reddish ring the size of an eraser tip, NOTHING else. No smell no nothing. Just looked like breakfast with a mark on it. I want to try again, but I want to know what went wrong so this doesn't happen again either! HELP!!!!

I am not an expert but this looks like what someone else described in a grocery store egg hatch thread. He concluded the eggs weren't fertile. There was just nothing there to develop. :/

I'm pretty sure they were fertile... I had 1 roo and 4 hens and I watched him mate them 3674256855 times a day! LOL!

That being said, they were all pullets who had only been laying for 2 months. Could that make a difference? 4 were from my friend who also has pullets from the same batch, but 2 extra mature roos. Also, one of the 4 eggs was from one of her mature hens.

I've seen a few people on BYC who have had the same success with pullet eggs as hens?

Could it be the weather here? It's pretty cold, but I also read people have success with refrigerated eggs????

Huh, I don't know then. And yes, you can hatch some grocery store eggs. Low temps reduce an eggs viability but you pretty much have to freeze the egg to 100% kill it. Well, we ended up with 5 mixed breed chicks, looks like 2 Ameracaunas, 2 Australorps, and 1 California white. None of the Light Sussex developed hatched. My hen waited until the 23rd day before she gave up on them. This afternoon she finally moved off the nest. I took the other eggs, didn't have the heart to open them. So I tossed them one by one into the river behind my house.

As I watched them floating down the river bobbing high on the water, I remembered about the water test. Since they were all floating high, I am glad to know none would have hatched if we had continued to wait.

All the eggs that were supposed to hatch on Saturday hatched Sunday. The only two that didn't were iffy when I locked-down. I did have to cull the little female Rhodebar last night. Her hock joint wasn't attached correctly, she couldn't walk, was just flopping around and she was not going to survive.

I do have 14 healthy chicks though, with 6 more due to hatch Tuesday. And another batch of Rhodebar eggs being sent to me this week, so hopefully my little roo will get a mate soon.

Day 23, still no pips or peeps. Did the water test yesterday. There were none that were obvious duds, but most of them didnt look good. However there were 2 that were floating and only the very tip was sticking out. That's good right??? I don't think the hatch is due to cold weather because the last week or two it's been in the 60s and 70s

That is so frustrating AnimalLover! I am not very experienced at this, but have been reading obsessively. I think if only a little bit was sticking out, that is a good sign. From what I read if they sank, or floated up high, they were bad, but having just a small amount sticking out was good. Any changes yet?
