That's a good idea, the babies will be fine, the early chickies always knock around the still hatching ones, it's normal. It's better not to risk the rest of the hatch.
It's day 18. We candled and confirmed 15 chicks ready for lock down tonight.
I woke up early after a wild dream about the hatch - to a spike in the temp. at 102.7!!! I raced in to rescue them from the oven and proceded to drop an egg in the process of turning them - smashing the side of an egg.
Trying not to panick, I dripped some candle wax over the giant smash hoping for the best. I decided to put them into lock down early so that the humidity would help the smashed-shell-chick to survive. So in upping the humidity, the temps plummeted and the humidity went too high!! I can't get that down or the temps back up.
*jumping for joy* I hear cheeping in one egg! Okay, no pipping yet but I'm just thrilled that at least one of the 4 eggs is still alive! For a newbie, this is a RUSH!
Hang in there gckiddhouse! I got my fingers crossed for ya!

Oh nooo. Sorry this happened to you. I hope your hatch turns out ok.
As for me I have six little fluffy standard possible frizzled cochin chicks in the brooder next to my bed. Two pipped yesterday that did not survive, one was shrinkwrapped when I pulled out it to try and help this morning and the other I saw pipped on the bottom and then oozed something out I think it drown.
I have one more cochin in the bator that has not pipped. Today is day 21
Oh I might add that these eggs were mailed.
Shook gently by the mail person "I dont know what it is??" (Said on the box highlighted EGGS)
Two of them had poo on em I scraped the bulk off and just left it natural style. (these hatched)
Oh and I just trusted what my bator instructions said. Did not even look at the temp. I just followed instructions on how much water to add and turned the eggs three times a day by hand.
There is tapping coming from my huge 3" long egg. Maybe I'll have a couple of little chicks when I get home from work. My hen, Sugar, keeps looking down like she is noting the tapping going on. I'm so excited...didn't think anything was going to happen. Will send a photo if the twins make it out of the shell.
