Hey all, can I join in?? I have 25 eggs in my homemade incubator that are due on March 5th or 6th. I have a BYC page with lots of pics if you want to read about how I built it, but here is one pic. I have mostly Blue Wheaton and Wheaton Ameraucana eggs, with a few others - 3 Golden Cuckoo Marans, 3 Ameraucana/Polish, an Easter Egger, and one Ameraucana/Barred Rock.
We incubated eggs last year using a broody hen. I really prefer that method, but she isn't broody this year and we need to grow our flock. We have lost 10 of our chickens just in the last month to predators. The last attack was a whole pack of coyotes that dug under the coop. We have 2 hens left.

So we have fixed the fortress and are going for more!

I am having trouble with my temps fluctuating. I don't have a thermostat on mine because it didn't work right. We are now using a dimmer. It works okay, but when the temp in the house fluctuates, so does the temp in the bator. I have that side of the house set at one temp now, so I am watching to see if that helps. It has been as hot as 102* in there. The eggs got to 101* I think. Did I cook them??

I wasn't going to candle until day 7. Sounds like some of you are candling more often than that.

Anyway, good hatching to you all. I will be watching for updates. This is a long 21 days, isn't it?

Couple of questions....

One, is it bad to candle them often?
Two, do bantams really hatch two days sooner than standard breeds.
And last, are there things you need to really worry about when you stagger your hatches?

i usually candle them every night,

and it hasnt afected them at all. i usually have them out max. one minute, i just love watching them dancing around in the egg

yes all of the bantam eggs usually hatch two or if the egg is especially small three days earlier.
