Whooo hoo,
Yep we got some over night 10 out of 12 hatched. With today being day 21 I will wait and see if the other two start to pip. Figuring out this homemade incubator was defiantly interesting. It took a lot of vigilance to finally get the thing to maintain proper temp and humidity. But it is doing great now.
Now that there are 10 little fluffy butts breathing in their the humidity is going WAY UP! So I opened up another hole for more ventilation. We actually put one hole large enough on top that if we needed to we could reach down into the incubator without it loosing humidity. We increased ventilation by opening this one up a bit. It was up to 89% humidity.
I did end up helping one a little bit though, it was the first one to pip sometime Saturday night. it was still in its shell strong enough to roll the egg around with it's beak out of a hole screaming it's head off. It decided to try to come out from the small end of the egg. So we brought it up through the hole on the top, and we went from 88 down to 87% humidity retrieving this little bugger so I'm happy with that part of our design. It could see with one eye through the hole, it started screaming and the egg looked almost as if it was jumping! I started at the hole and slowly pulled the shell off, then very gently pulled the membrane back. It had zero blood, soon as we gave it a little more room it started thrashing it's way out of the egg, the shell fell off and it started to stand up almost and scream and it kicked it's shell. It was so funny. Put it back in the other with the babies and it finally settled down but was still very verbal about the whole situation.
I'm happy for a first time hatcher in a homemade incubator I think we did pretty good. Here is the first 10
How long did you wait to move yours out of the incubator?
I have some others who's to start lock down tonight. We will see how many more hatch on Wed.
