hatch day :)) 10/30/2012

I've got seven out of ten so far, and the other three have pipped. I'm really amazed they did this well-- I can think of so many things we weren't careful enough about...just got lucky, I guess. So far we've got a female Black Star, a male Cinnamon Queen, and five Blue Splash Marans (inside of very light eggs for Marans).

I've heard just keeping them cool will keep eggs dormant for a couple weeks, but their chances start going down after about day four. My eggs got stuck in the post office over a holiday weekend so it was a whole week before they went into the bator--and we only lost two eggs, one in shipment and one died at day seven.

well i've got 4 out of 7 not really a bad hatch for my first time..out of the other 3 two were duds and 1 never internally piped and suffocated..heard him pecking before dinner then after nothing~ he had passed! i'm happy with my 4 chickadees...time to clean the bator and start collecting for my next hatch!~ what is the best way to store eggs long enough to collect for a more larger hatch???
post us pics when you have time

  • Hatching eggs should be stored in a cool area that is humid, not too dry. I store my eggs in my garage as this is well insulated and stays cool throughout the day but a cooler room in the house will be your best bet, one that doesn't have the sun on it during the day and stays cool. Ideally the room should have a humidity of around 60 to 70% but this is hard to find in modern houses.
  • Eggs should always be stored with the pointed end pointing downwards. The egg is actually damaged if it is stored with the round end down for any significant length of time.
  • Turn eggs. Just like your eggs require turning in an incubator, eggs that are being stored should also be turned regularly. I turn mine every morning and evening by tilting the egg box or tray the opposite way.
  • Only store eggs for hatching for up to 7 days. After this, hatchability starts to decline quite rapidly.
When you are ready to incubate, you should allow your eggs to come to room temperature slowly and wash them with egg disinfectant (if you have decided to do this, not everybody does) before putting them into your incubator.

yeah i know what you mean there was a time or two when i forgot to wash my hands before turning...and i miscalculated my due date and stopped turning them a day early..but my four are very lively this morning..my two year old held one and he gave it a hug(tilts his head to it) then it tried pecking him and he ran..loll...but i can't wait to start my new hatch! also do you know how to tell if it's a roo or a hen? i thought maybe by little bumps on the back of their leg but they all have that..

the 1st picture is from last night, the 2nd picture is my 2yr old holding one for the first time, the 3rd one is him running away while the chick chases him trying to peck him, and the 4th one is of them this morning all together!

Cute!

All of mine are out now. The last three came out at about three in the morning, waking me up. Unlike the older ones, the newborns haven't figured out that dark should mean silence. I ended up with six blue splash marans (Aspen, Goblin, Hollendaise, Ivy, Jupiter, and Kaye), two cinnamon queen girls (Boo and Chickpea), a cinnamon queen boy (Elroy), and a black star girl (Dumpling-w-I think she's buried in the pile in this picture).

The assortment I got included a couple of sex-link hybrid breeds, where the boys and girls are different colors. I have no idea on the others--I didn't know it was possible to tell on tiny babies, except by experts.
