But gives me time to make my brooder! Now I need to buy some dowel rods for perches etc. Cut down some egg cartons for setting my eggs in for lockdown. They need to be 95 in the brooder right? Oh so much to do

9pm on day 20, and the first Australorp chick popped out of his egg. He had only unzipped about half an inch before supper, and when I went back to look, there he was, gasping but completely free from his shell. No blood or yolk sticking out of his tummy, just something that looks like poop inside the shell. He's really energetic, hopping all over the other eggs, wreaking havoc. Maybe he'll get them going. I have pips on all but 4 of the 24 eggs now. Some haven't changed since this morning, but having one guy out should help me be more patient. He sure looks lonely in there. Cute little guy with big black eyes. I stare at him (her) in awe of how in just 3 weeks in a sweaty little box he went from egg to chicken. The bird egg is truly an amazing creation.

I'll post some pictures later when he's fuzzed up a little.

Are my guys who pipped and now got rolled over in trouble? I'm thinking no, but I can't really do anything anyway.

your hatch is doing SUPER good!! Congratulations! I hear that even when the eggs get soccer balled around by the other chicks they are fine. I just can't stand the thought of watching that so I have always put my eggs in cartons to hatch. GOTTA HAVE PICTURES!!

95 degrees is good. I hang my heat lamp with a ceramic bulb (so much safer) at one end (so they can move away from it if they get too hot) of a plastic tub in the house to start my chicks. I like to keep an eye on them for a few days to make sure they are eating and drinking. Then I move them out to a wooden brooder box in the chicken house for a few weeks. Then into a house made just for the chicks. This time I'm using sand in my brooders covered with paper towels for the first couple of weeks. I'm tired of worrying about the chicks eating the shavings and the waterer always full of shaving too!!

I changed over to sand in my chick/chicken houses and it is SO easy to clean!! I love it!!
