Hatch with me! Placed in bator on 5-13-2010. First hatch!

Well, I have some sad news. I had all eggs pip out of 12....11 hatched, one died while hatching. I then had one die within a few hours of being hatched...unsure why. I then went down this morning and another was dead in the nest. Again, unknown as to the reason. I went to check on them again this afternoon and found that my hen had decided to nest on top of the water dish. So I had 5 drown peeps.

Well, needless to say, I have 4 peeps remaining out of my bantams and they were taken from my broody since she isn't being a very nice mama. My daughter called me the CPS...chickie protective services. LOL! Now they are in my kitchen under a heat lamp with some food and water, unable to drown. I could just

I was upset just reading about it! I can only imagine how it made you feel!!

This is frightening news for me since I plan on giving a first time broody two eggs I have in my incubator

I started these eggs especially for her since she has been sitting on golf balls for weeks now!
Today I have the only 2 eggs left out of 15 shipped eggs due to hatch. One has hatched and I have never seen a chick hatch like he did. He didn't zip, he broke out chunks of shell until one side of the egg was large enough for him to push out of!!

Here is a picture of him right before he broke free. He doesn't seem like the healthiest chick, keeps swallowing funny. Darn shipped eggs!

Don't worry about your broody...I'm sure she will be a good mama. My Barred Rock is an awesome mama and hasn't hurt any of her babies except for the one that she stepped on but I think 11 was a lot for a first time mom. The bantam broody was just a brat! She wasn't very nice to them while they were hatching either. She had stepped on the eggs and pecked at them too. I'm glad that any of them even hatched alive. I should have just taken them the minute they hatched. It makes me feel so bad knowing that I could have prevented it if I would have just taken them.

My Blue Wyandotte broody does seem very sweet and devoted to the nest. I will hope for the best and plan for the worst!

Don't be hard on yourself about the chicks! You gave those chicks a chance for the best senario of being with a chicken mommy! It's not your fault she turned out to be a lousy mother!! Have fun loving the four you rescued!

Thank you! They are currently snuggled in my shirt trying to snooze.

They will be so spoiled since they are so tiny.

I'm so sorry! I hope the ones you have left are doing very well! Looks like two of my shipped chicks aren't going to make it. One came in as a 'stargazer' and one I think has shipping stress.

Well while I'm waiting on my other eggs to pip... here are some pics of the 'mystery' chicks from the assortment from Ideal. I dont know what they are, maybe y'all can help

Chick number 1 is the biggest mystery for me...so any ideas would be great.

I also got a pullet surprise from Ideal,
I think #5 is a Ancona, and #7 Buttercup

I have a chick that looks just like #1, feathering in completely black. My guess is a La Fleche. Not many chicks are completely black.
