hatchaholics - what do YOU do with all the roos?

Yah, I'm a vegetarian, so eating them would not work. My husband is NOT a veg but he won't even kill spiders.

Ah well, guess it's back to hatching guineas, where we don't care what gender they are!

I could rehome the whole lot today without problem - last time I put up day olds they went within an hour. I don't wanna do that, as they are neat breeds and I'd like to see what comes of it. I'll let this be my one experiment, maybe.

We do have a large horse barn we could put crowing roos in until we can rehome, so that's the emergency option.

yah my neighbor has complained about the crowing too-but I live on 6 acres in the middle of nowhere ( you'll see hahaha) and I told her she's going to have to deal with it. Every Fall it gets loud around here from all the crowing but I explained I have to let them grow out until I see which roos Im keeping for breeding and which will be processed. I warned her about chickenstock and she was in shock..I laughed but told her come the following Monday it will be much quieter and be patient-her hubby is coming! hahaha shes mad I got some neighbors into chickens-LOL Life IS good haha

Hey, it's chickenshock. That's a new one. Let's all stop by her house the night before.

My roo may come with me for the processing so someone else can do the deed. I'll chop your roos if you chop mine.

How many roos do you have and how old are they? They don't get that loud until around 16 weeks or later.

featherz-remember we said you could bring your roos with you and we would process them for you? Just bring a ice filled cooler and your DH can have chicken to put in your freezer?? As long as it's not like 20!

Sonew-

these are too small! I just hatched them today and yesterday. Plus I have 13 silkies which are a month old (rehoming half of those today), but you know how silkies are. I don't think you'll wanna process my two week old chicks.

and I doubt I could get hubby to eat freezer camp chicken - he took convincing to even eat the eggs our pullets are laying 'but they are small.. why is this one a funny shape.. the yolk looks different....' hee hee.

The cats might eat it tho, or I could take to the inlaws.

For those who are thinking 'you shoulda thought of that' - I did! I was planning to rehome all the day olds like I did last time, but I was just pondering if I could try keeping them to see if there's any ladies in the batch.

Guess it's off to craigslist.

and you could use the roo meat to make stock and not eat the meat??? feed the meat back to your animals mixed with their regular food-help save the food bill for that week:-)

I have rehomed 8 roos this year on craigslist for free and had more takers than roos. Guess it depends on where you are at and who needs roos. Also my neighbor has a friend that will take them as she prosses them. So whatever my new hatch turns out maybe thats where my roos will go. Dont like the idea but in reality sometimes we have to do things we dont like.

Hahaha.. we crazy veg's don't eat stock either (if it's not hidden in something I don't know about!) - I think I'll have no problem giving out free roos if they are big enough for someone to process, but little ones are doubtful. I'll see what happens when I post up the craigslist for my silkies today. If the same lady who has bought my chicks in the past needs more chicks, maybe she can pick these up too /sob. If I wasn't working, I'd sell ALL of these and just order a pullet pack from somewhere so I'd still have chicks to play with. Crazy me.

Your best bet would probably be to find someone who is interested in the extra roos before you set the eggs. Could you maybe post an add at the feed store or a local food co-op for people who are interested in growing out roosters for their own use? Or try posting on craigslist?
