Hatchery Practices

Okay, this is in no way a bash on vegetarians, but how do you all get your proteins in?? I had a nutrition teacher in college tell us vegetarians were generally unhealthy people, due to protein deficiencies. Mind you - she was 300 + pounds, so had no good grasp on good nutrition herself, but, do you eat eggs and cheese, or is it all veggies and non-animal proteins?

Just curious - please don't be offended, it's just something I wonder about because I am a meat eater (sorry) and I never really venture into the vegan world.

Vegan and vegetarian are different things. Vegans eat nothing
animal based. No dairy, eggs, or fish.

Vegetarians are diverse. Some just don't eat red meat. Others
no land animals but eat eggs and/or fish.

Humans do not need animal proteins. There is plenty of protein
available in beans, nuts, some vegies, even certain grains. Our
bodies can manufacturer advanced proteins from basic proteins
and simple proteins from complex ones.

I'm not a vegetarian but I wish I was. I like meat too much.
I'm also of the opinion that a reasonable amount of meat can
be a healthy part of your diet.

Well, see I have a SIL who won't eat anything that had a mother.

Sorry, she's a nutjob for many other reasons, the vegan thing is new.

When she comes to our home, (only once a year, THANK GOD), she brings tofu, a bag of frozen veggies, a bottle of extra virgin olive oil and a bottle of barbeque sauce.

She dumps half the bottle od EVOO in the pan, deep fries the tofu and veggies and then dumps half a bottle of barbeque sauce on it. It just doesn't seem healthy to me.

I am not a vegan/vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination, and I deep fry NOTHING. Doesn't matter if it's veggies and tofu. Deep fat frying is deep fat frying. Esp. when her EVOO is 14 g of fat per tbsp.

I just have a poor example of vegan/vegetarian lifestyle then?

I wish people who didnt eat red meat would say, I don't eat red meat rather then calling themselves vegetarian.
Add fish and chicken to that as well, they arn't vegetables.
Just one of my pet peaves after living with a vegetarian and a vegan for a large portion of my life.

Back on topic here.
Maybe writing to the hatchery in a polite non confrontational way would be the best way to find an answer, instead of just talking about what people have heard.

PS, if you want to start another topic on human eating preferences, please start another thread and for goodness sake play nice.

Thank you, barg! This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, too. Vegetarians don't eat meat, poultry or fish, period. It drives me insane when I hear people say they're veggies but they still eat fish and chicken!

To keep this on topic...maybe if someone wanted to order from a hatchery they could contact them and find out what they do with baby boy chicks. If they like the hatchery's practices and consider them humane, maybe then they could order??

A family friend worked for a zoo once. He said they use to get about 3000 chicks sometime to feed to the hyena's and other animals. Not sure if something was wrong with them or not. But I thought it was sad.
