The pip zipped!! WOOT WOOT. I have one baby out and another pipped!! Amazing... guys the temp was as high as 110 at one time and the top was unplugged for hours one day.. Ahhh the holidays! and these buggars are still pipping and zipping. AMAZING!!!
Laskaland, that is wonderful! I'm so excited for you!
Jeeperspeepers, is this your hen's first time as a mama? My little broody did that her first hatch. She'd ignore the other eggs during the day and play with her already hatched ones. The good part was that it was late summer and she was where it was very warm - (inside my bathroom of my no ac house - close to 90 in there). THen she'd get back on after about hour or so. Only hatched out 4 that time. Liked to have drove me crazy. That's why I figured I'd come up with something to use as a hatcher if I needed to help that last couple days - then give her the hatchee(s). But this time, she did just what Kelly said, didn't move those last couple days, stayed an extra couple days too, then got off the nest. Nothing remaining was viable. Her little chicks did come out and run around.
On my hatch: I have 6 bob whites out so far. 2 pips yet.
Shelley, did you say to leave them in there as they may hatch out over a couple of days? How long should I leave the remaining eggs? I did put the others in another place. I only have one hygrometer so I hope I have the humidity good.
Should I take the chicks out? Or leave them there? They're really running around in there. I hate to open the bator if there's some more to come out.
Kelly, congrats on the turkeys and ducks! Good luck with the Marans!
I have one baby out and man is he/she singing! Sounds like it is yelling at the others to tell them to hurry up and get out. I'm so loving this. I'm going to be up all night.
yes, this is her first time. I should have just removed the chick but instead after the second one hatched and it looked like she stepped on its back or something (it had a hole type injury), it died and I took the last four eggs out and brought them in. They were cold and she was not tending to them at all. I do not have a bator so we will see what happens. As I write this, one is trying to get out. There is a hole and I see the beak and it is peeping loudly. Everything I read says not to help. Boy is that hard!!!
The other eggs are not doing anything. How long does it take to get out? I am feeling bad about the poor babies.
I think they do yell at each other to get out! Sometimes I go and talk to the babies and try to get them to be loud to get the others out (yes, I am insane)
What a great way to start the new year!!

Awww!! Sorry about the chick!!! Sometimes they are born with the yolk still needing to be absorbed (that gunk hanging out) it does get absorbed sometimes and the babies make it.
Pips are when the chick makes a hole in the air sac and through the shell, basically getting fresh air and ready to come out. Sometimes this takes up to 24 hours between pip and zip...zip is just that when the chick pecks all around the shell to get it's wet self outta the shell. If you see the shell after they hatch, it almost looks like a zipper.
I would wait for a little bit to put them out with the bigger chickens cuz they may pick on them? I don't have any experience with that, so I will defer to someone else. I keep my chicks seperated until about 6 weeks when they are fully feathered and can hold their own...
