HATCHING begins TODAY! 6/29/10 page 4 update Silkie eggs

Hi Cindy! Wednesday is the day for me and I had one hatch last night and 3 pips this morning! I have Mary's eggs...I had 30 of them. 20 went to lockdown...

The baby that hatched is a little blue and has a lovely little vaulted skull and the toes look great! Oh I am so excited...today is Christmas for me! The baby that was born has been named "Coleslaw" lol..I will send pics when I have clean dry birds!

Go, chickies, go!

Only 3 silkies out and it looks like that may be it. One more pipped, but died. (The egg was tiny, I don't know if that was the reason or not.)

I don't understand because the temp and humidity was right on the entire time. I was hoping for a handful and I will not say that I am not disappointed because I am. That was a lot of money for only three chicks to hatch out, but that's the gamble when you buy hatching eggs. I do not at all fault the sellers because the eggs arrived beautifully and they DID grow.

I will have to check before, but at this point am not sure which of the breeders these came out of, but I think it is Kathy, not any of Glenn's.

I cannot tell you how many silkie hatches I've had like this.

It got a LOT better when I finally bought a Rcom Suro King incubator with automatic everything. Also, I incubate silkie eggs at about 45% humidity and lock them down at 65%. That higher humidity seems to have helped also. I think it may have something to do with their vaulted skulls, although I have no scientific proof of that.

Give them some more time...you may have a late bloomer or two.

Today I cut the incubator off...I had 12 total - I have no idea what colors each of these guys are - I lost track...Out of the 30 I got 12 - so not too bad. I am VERY pleased with the pretties that I got - I only got one with a problem...he has 6 toes on each foot! I guess that is better than not having enough...lol. These were the eggs from Mary Brooks-Robbins...I am ordering more! I have 2 dozen eggs in the incubator now from Bobbi Porto - I am hoping for another good hatch, last time I only got 1 chick out of the 48 eggs that I ordered from her...it must have been a bad day at the Post Office, because they were all fertile and packaged VERY nicely...

Here are my new babies...help me with colors please - I am a silkie newbie! They are all named after food...my 5-year old has quite a sense of humor.

This one rolled in the feed when it was still wet, so he needs a bath to fluff up more...

Well here they are - tell me what you think!

Have a great day!
