HATCHING begins TODAY! 6/29/10 page 4 update Silkie eggs

Still just the three. :-( Expensive little chickies. If you don't count shipping on starteds, I paid more per bird on these than I did on the started birds that I got from Bobbi a few months ago.

I looked closer and actually two hatched from Glenn and one from Kathy. That's the way things go, though and, as I said, I cannot fault them. They packaged them great, the chicks grew, some just didn't get past a certain age in incubation and the others did, but never hatched. Incubator stats were perfect. I don't know what to think. :-(

Now I'm wishing I'd waited because I now have three chicks to find someone to care for while we go on vacation in a couple of weeks. If I'd know I'd only end up with three, I likely would have postponed getting any as I have no clue what I'll be charged for someone to chick sit three chicks for me! Might have been worth it more monetarily to have more.

I sure would chick sit for ya if I was any where close, but your a few states away. So far I have 4 pips out of 14 that looked like they might make it. Started with 30 shipped eggs.

hoping for more.

Too bad. Just a little tip because I had horrible silkie hatches when I first started hatching them. I started incubating at the higher end of the range and had much better hatches. My is set for 100.3 and I've had pretty good hatches with shipped eggs. Second tip...don't turn shipped eggs for the first 4 days of incubation. Then turn them only between day 4 and day 12. Don't change their position after day 12. I also recommend using an egg carton for shipped eggs due to the fragile aircell situation. Incubate at 45% and lockdown at 65%.

I had a good hatch of lavender silkie eggs even though about 1/2 of them had loose aircells using the procedure above. Don't know if it will work for everyone but it sure did for me.

I had an awful hatch, my worst yet, actually, from Bobbi's eggs.

Just wanted to let everyone know, Poof hatched 9 out of 14 eggs on July 3rd. Eight lived. I have already traded 4 for a mini rex jr. (rabbit) and some hay. Isn't barter the best?!? Yolkie, the one we kept out of the last hatch, is getting big and I'm not getting my hopes up too much, but I think may be a hen. It's so wonderful watching the baby chicks following Mama everywhere.
