Hatching Eggs - Journal

Pics
Both seem to have passed. I’m a little shocked at the one with the bill showing passing. The membrane is still moist as well. I did not do anything to that one beyond making a hole to see what was going on.

Common theme between them both is the amount of yolk left. It’s quite a large amount.

Any ideas as to what causes this?

And anyone have some chocolate or silver call duck eggs I can buy to try one more time? Or know anyone?

I’m disheartened and know I’m partly to blame I’m sure. I just can’t figure out what’s going wrong. I did a few things differently this time too.
Determined to get it right at least once.

Oh I’m so sorry 😞 I don’t know what could be wrong. Temperature is for sure ok?

Are you set on hatching Calls? Regular ducks are easier
I’ve been putting our ducks eggs in there too with the call eggs and none of those have made it either. Some will make it to hatch day then die. I haven’t messed with them either like the call eggs.

There’s a chance the temp could be wrong but with two thermometers you’d think it would be alright. I’ll probably look into a different incubator and seperate hygrometer to try.

Metzers Has Call ducklings. So sorry you lost the little ones.

My only guess is temperature too low and that’s why you’re having unabsorbed yolks
I will get a different external thermometer to stick inside and see if it reads different. I have 2 of my own eggs in there again on day 5

Update to this discussion.

I did a 100% dry hatch with 21 call duck eggs, averaging 25-30% humidity throughout incubation.
For the first 2 weeks or so, I kept them on their sides and hand-turned. For the last 10 days, they were upright in the auto-turner.
18 made it to lockdown.
Of those, 17 hatched without assistance.
Of note, these eggs came from a farm I had tried in the past with little success.
I just saw this on a thread over in the hatching forum @Beanfox

I personally had terrible luck trying a dry incubation, but other people have had great success

That makes me even more confused too because my humidity was around 30-35% all the times I tried 😭
I did up it to 50% for these 2 eggs I have in right now to see if it makes a difference. I upped the temp by a little as well. Going to look for a new hygrometer today.

There’s a chance the humidity was fine and it was the temp. So I probably should’ve only changed one variable. But I’m a little tired of failing lol

I know, humidity is so confusing. It seems like there is no one correct answer.

For my next hatch I’m going to try 50-55% humidity
