Hatching Eggs - Journal

Pics
Hello friends! I bring good news for once!

I’ve been holding off on the updates incase anything went wrong. While we’re not in the clear, it’s looking promising!

One of my duck eggs made it to hatch! Yesterday the side of the egg started cracking. Never had an internal pip. Head must have been just off.

When I came home from work a few minutes ago it’s bill was partly sticking out. Tbh I thought it had passed away, as it wasn’t moving or chirping… mainly because all the others passed so I think I’m a bit scarred lol. I took it out to evaluate and removed the dried membrane. Then it started chirping and yawning etc! So very much alive.

Back in the incubator it went. Now we wait! Not sure what to do now 😂😂 Am I going to need to help since it’s in the wrong spot or?? I’m kinda freaking since we haven’t made it this far lol

Hooray!!! :wee Baby looks great!
You won’t necessarily have to assist, no. It should be fairly simple to tell if you need to, though, since you can see baby’s bill. Chewing, yawning, and those soft peeps tells you that baby is resting and absorbing the yolk.

Remember, since they’ve skipped the internal pip, they may need an extra 24 hours from pip to zip. Since the pip was yesterday, I’m guessing they’ll be ready for hatch in 1 - 2 days.

Let us know if there’s a big behavior change / more progress!!

Exciting!! Is this a Call duckling?
It’s one of our duck eggs! I’m assuming a magpie/swedish mix based on the bill. It’s definitely a Swedish egg based on the shell color. The bill has some yellow, so im doubting it’s pure Swedish (which is fine)

I couldn’t find anymore call eggs so it’ll have to wait until next season!

What signs should I look for to know it needs help?

Nothing new as of this morning! But I’m at work now.
I have one of the duck house cameras in front of the incubator to keep an eye on it. Looked like it was rolling a bit overnight. But the shell looks the same.

It’s leg is directly over its head, is that normal?

Distressed peeping without progress, bill moved away from hole without progress, and appearing to be stuck (attempting to pip the same spot over and over). Any big behavior change will let you know baby is getting ready to hatch, and you should watch them close.

Foot over head sounds like a malposition.. You may have to assist after all. I had a very confused duckling get into that malposition in the middle of a zip, requiring me to finish the hatch for them.

This is very helpful, thankyou!

Occasionally the duckling would scream and wiggle versus soft peeps. So I’ll evaluate when I get home.

It’s head has stayed in the same position. It’ll push its bill out of the hole it made but that’s about the most it’s head moves, not sure if that means it is stuck. The egg will rock around though, so idk.

Oh boy, not surprised. My experience with hatching eggs has been everything but normal so far, so this follows suit 🤣🤣

A slow bill push followed by resting is normal - this is just the baby stretching.

I found stuck pips to be more rapid, like once or twice a minute, followed by distressed peeps.

Okay thankyou! I will watch its behavior when I get home

Appreciate the help
