I feel that sentiment. Same thing happened to my splash Marans roosters. I really, really liked them. Great birds, lovely coloration, got along with them fine...but they flared at my boys one day and went after them (and no, I don't let my boys torture or harass the birds), so it was off with their heads.

what's the biggest age range for chicks in the same brooder/grow out pen? I've got eggs hatching in two weeks, 4 weeks after that and then a Cackle hatchery surprise a week later. Too big of an age gap? Should I rig another grow-out pen?

Well once I get housing figured out tomorrow..... I will go pick up my Choc Wyandotte pair, BLRW Pair and Silver Penciled Wyandotte Bantam pair SUNDAY

That is too big for me. I will do a week or 2 apart but soon those get separated.

hmmmm....guess I'd better figure out how to cheaply turn an old 6x8 open trailer into an outdoor brooder before March.

I don't really have a good way to do that, but you might want to look into some flexwatt. It is not expensive and it can work with a thermostat. You can build a BIG Brooder box and make the top with hardiboard and put some flexwatt on it. Maybe a fan to circulate the heat better. Just a thought.

Oh, man. why do I have to live in a state that make me not able to play with everyone...I so want to claim some eggs today. seriously.
I am about to have a completely open incubator.

mmmm....silver pencilling....chocolate....more chocolate. everyone else has exciting stuff happening. I want some!

One of my random yard-chickens:

I'm sorry -- a chicken with polka-dots? You KNOW I had to get at least one! She's fun to watch, but not very friendly. As opposed to my lone ancona, who decided she had to sit on my head earlier this afternoon :)

My yard flock consists of my original four rock hens and CM roo, one CM cross hen I'm growing out as an experiment, and an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink sampler pack from Meyer Hatchery ('cause, ya know, how would I know which breeds I liked unless I got them all?) They're a fun bunch to watch scurry around -- very colorful! And then sometimes they simply come knocking at the door...

I don't take pictures for weeks and weeks and then I go photo-crazy...

You have some very pretty birds

Yes, like mad, wicked crazy territorial. They were raised with the chickens, but now housed separately and they didt like anyone today. Told hubby they are in total lockdown until they are butchered.
My turkies keep my guineas in check.... The guineas will try to pick on my call ducks, which also free range my whole back yard... and my turkies will chase them all over the yard... it is hilarious to watch.
