I am glad to see your day has gotten better.
Have fun! DON'T do anything WE wouldn't do! (like come home without a new breed?)

Thanks for reminding me-I need to get Maggie's dog license by January 31.
Now THAT looks like a Tolbunt!

They have a definite lacing pattern, not Tolbunt. I sent them a message.

Well.... I DID get a Silver Phoenix Roo.. but I already had two Silver Phoenix hens.. no roo, so I guess that doesn't count... And I DID come home with an unexpected guest - a free white showgirl who folded under travel stress.. she is in solitary confinement by my feet as I speak - however that will go in the silky pen if she survives. So I guess I didn't come home with any new breeds I wasn't expecting to get (I did get a quad of SFH and a pair of Splash/Blue Copper Marans, those were expected) However - the one thing that I DID get.. that I really wanted... that I didn't expect.. a cabinet incubator in my price range! Old Sportsman 15something.. but it works..

Doesn't have the other symptoms associated with this, and the "air" is everywhere, not just under the neck. I did find a couple of old threads on BYC that indicated it might be a ruptured air sac or punctured lung. Doesn't sound too promising. Apparently it can take weeks to heal (only if you can keep the bird still and quiet) and the air has to be let out every day, and they often die anyway. I'm not sure what to do. What a miserable treatment and long isolation time. Poor guy.
I would grab a needle at Tractor and see what comes out. If it's air than you know you are dealing with a ruptured air sack (no harm in helping him I just wouldn't breed him if he survives

)

If it's fluid than I would suspect a systemic infection

Please let us know what happens!

I just read your last post- If he is destined for the pot than I would probably just put him out of his misery now

Poor little guy can't be too comfortable like that.

What a wonderful acquaintance to have! That's so cool. And I kinda figured you already had, but just in case I figured it was definitely worth saying :) There's so much I don't know yet that as you've probably noticed I don't hand out much advice on the threads, but isolating a sick bird, in case the owner wasn't already doing so? Yeah, that I would say.

BTW, just checked one basque egg earlier this eve and saw lots of pretty veining :) Thank you!

I'm constantly learning from all the wonderful people here, so any suggestion is always appreciated!

Dr. Tully helped me out tremendously a few months ago. There are no vets in my area (other than LSU) that deal with poultry. I had a cockerel who was making a crazy noise when he breathed, but he didn't have any other symptoms. At the time, I had a neighbor who had a flock of all roosters (what in the world!) that they did not pen, and they started showing up at my house about the same time. I just knew they brought some disease to my flock, so I called LSU and made an appointment to euthanize my cockerel for a necropsy. Dr. Tully asked for permission to examine him with his students before euthanizing him and found he had swallowed something that injured his glottis and trachea. No disease thank goodness!

Because I don't really have anyone else to contact with medical issues, he gave me his email address. He is even going to try to get LSU to work with me to collect samples for AI testing without charging me a per bird exam fee (which is cost prohibitive). Woot!

I hope all the Basques hatch for you! We really like them. I'm about to throw a few more eggs in the bator myself. I eventually want to replace my rooster because he and my DH have a hate-hate relationship. He's fine with me and it's really a shame because he is beautiful. I have some very nice cockerels growing out now, but I want a few more chicks.

I had 2. One looked miserable and I didn't know what it was and we culled her. The next one I read they can absorb it so I left him. Found him belly up the next day almost dead. I culled him too.

I could not keep up on the Old Timers thread, but one think I took away, if birds can't survive and thrive at my place they need to go. I think they are right there. If you help a bird with something that is not NORMAL they will breed that weakness forward. Not a good thing to have an unthrifty flock. Let the strong survive.

Boy that sounds harsh, and it was not directed at anyone.... sorry JMHO No extraordinary measures are taken at my place to keep a bird alive. Not good for the health of the flock.

I agree with that completely!! We've had -18 temps and I have not heated, mostly because I want my birds to be hardy... if they don't survive the cold, then I don't want them.. Of course, they have a coop that is protected from the wind and such, but no extra heat... Interestingly, I've only lost one chicken this winter, a hatchery RIR pullet.... survival of the fittest I guess

Trying not to freak out. Just went to candle and the bator was at 99 on the top shelf. Opened it to candle and now its at 93 and hasn't come up. :/ I have over 100 viable chicks in there right now and just set another 40.

Don't panic. It will go up. How long has it been?

Not long. All of your Ams are developing bar maybe one? I didn't candle all of the Marans yet.

It's back up to 99 at the top. I just need to keep an eye on it before I go to bed to make sure it doesn't get crazy because I adjusted it :barnie don't want to lose these babies!

I had tinkering with the temps. I had to do that all the time before I got the digital thermostat. WHT make it hard to stabilize the temps. That is what I used before the HATCHER MASSACRE
