Today has not been a very good day. I lost one of my black Orp hens today and I can't figure out why.

I went out to collect eggs at about 3:30pm and everyone seemed to be fine. When I went out in the garage about 5:45pm, I heard a little racket in the coop and decided to see if anyone had laid an egg. I found the hen just laying there. There is no sign of any injury and she didn't appear ill. Everyone else looks fine. When I looked her over, she had a little bit of a pasty butt, but that is all I could see. I don't know what to think.

Then, after dinner, I went to set some eggs and my Brinsea incubator isn't working right.

And, of course, I just lent my second one to the preschool teacher. It keeps saying "Sensor Error" and "Resetting Sensor" back and forth. I am hoping that the sensor just got a little damp when I was cleaning it and will work right tomorrow.

I know you said you heard a little racket- is it possible something spooked her and she flew into the wall or something? Maybe broke her neck?
That happened to me once, found a perfectly healthy hen lying dead, after closer inspection I could tell her neck was broken

Always fun to have new chickens in the house.. Hubby said this morning if my Roosters in the basement don't stop crowing at 4am they have to move to the barn... I went downstairs and and had a talk with them

Losing one of our babies is never easy, but I think it's even worse when we have no idea why. Could she have had a heart attack?

Thank you. I thought that at first because her neck was very limp. I felt along it and it didn't feel like it was actually broken anywhere, but I could be wrong. I don't remember for sure, but she may have had her head underneath her where she was laying. She could have knocked herself out and then smothered herself by falling on her head. I hope it is as simple as that.
