Hi All!

Actually, the mystery Craigslist poster is me!  You are right, Sah,  I am only doing because this because unique breeds are just not available in MN.  And good stock is even tougher.  A X Silkie for $10 is about as exotic as you get in MPLS and I want to help new chicken owners learn about saving and preserving the heritage breeds.  Besides, I live in the city.  If I can't keep them all, I can at least peddle them.

Every spring, I work with about 100 metro and Suburban families and 3 or 4 schools to start up Urban Chicken Coops.  I run  free day-long workshops about city chicken keeping, we build a varitey of chicken tractors and help them acquire healthy chickens.  It is my way of community building.

What happens with most of these families is that they order the "small city" kind of packages from the hatchery and all of their chickens die or are sick.  You really can't send 3 hatchery chicks to MN in March priority mail and think they will live!  I decided a couple of years ago that we could do better, so I have been working on helping people with this since.  I am super excited this year to be able to move away from the hatchery stock that I have been getting in years past to hatching good quality birds.  But, it is more risk for me.

As far as profit, I don't make any.  Most years, I break even.  I give a ton of chicks away to families that I just want to get addicted.  I just promised 3 of Flocksalot Midgets to the cutest kid in the neighborhood for Easter because he fell so in love with my turkeys and his mom doesn't have the money and I always give birds free to schools and to my students.  BTW:  A photograher contacted me about borrowing some chicks for an easter shoot, I agreed if I could have rights to the pics.  Some of your chicks will be art!!  I will try to share them.

I have had several contact me about eggs and I give them whatever you send me for $18 which is about what it costs for either PP or shipping.  I also pass along any extras to the 4H kids.  I charge more for the chicks because it cost me to lose so many in shipping and hatching.  Also, because those who can pay for the chicks help pay for the ones I give away.  It is a wonderful way of paying for both my hobbies, chickens and wine making.  :celebrate

I guess I really didn't think about you guys not liking this use of the swap.  I am interested in your opinion on it.  I am not sure who "he who shan't be named" is, but I can promise that I am true to my word and honest in my intentions.  If this use feels like an exploitation of your objectives on the swap, I can rethink this years plan to be a bird peddler and go back to ordering hatchery stock.  IDK:  Opinions?

Actually I thought it was you ;) going through my list of people who claimed quail eggs from me, you where one of two people who I didn't have addresses for. :D I like sleuthing!
I think it's great to share when you can! I will keep it in mind when I ship the quail eggs to you :D

I think I am just going to quit being nice, other people always seem to have a problem with it when I do. I guess no good deed goes unpunished for sure. I give up.

I greatly appreciate your consideration and good deeds. :hugs. You have been very kind to me, an helpful talking me from my panic edge with my sick boys. So thank you and don't change who you are Ecuador other people can be selfish and stubborn and narrow minded.

I love that you are helping others get started with birds that they may not otherwise be able to afford! It's wonderful to be involved in your community that way.

Don't let a few grumpy grumblers dissuade you from doing nice things! Most people are truly appreciative when someone shows kindness.

It is great that true friendships are created from these swap threads. Have a wonderful visit.

x2!! I hope y'all have a great time today!

Awwwww I feel like giving you all a great big group hug! :hugs

Seriously, you all are wonderful, and I am glad that you have allowed me to be a part of it. OK, so I have only done one swap....but still. :)

I would love to make a deal/swap with someone for some turkeys eggs. And someone that knows how to hatch turkey eggs hatch them and then I can get them in May when I go see Meg for the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. Anyone want to help me with that? :fl

I could swap some midgets. I usually have excellent hatches, but not too sure about shipping them. Once they hatch we get a bit possessive of our babies. If you come up to Wisconsin we could give you the nickel tour and ..........oh........man........maybe.......let you......pick some. Oh that was rough. I can show you how to hug a turkey too! Next year if all goes well I will have a few other breeds of turkeys. White Hollands are currently incubating from a private swap!

Why did it seem shady?
I think this is a sensitive issue. For the BYCers that offer their rare breed eggs for almost next to nothing on this swap thread, they may feel taken advantaged of if all you do is resell their eggs. Even if your "profit" is minimal, I think the practice is frowned upon. If you hatch the eggs and sell the extra chicks that you don't need, I think this is okay, as I think other swappers do the same. I myself got into chickens last year as a result of a summer project with my daughter. I bought a Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco incubator, found this thread, and consider myself a hatchaholic six months later. I live in the city so can't keep all the chicks that I hatch. The extras are given to friends and family. I don't sell my chicks, but I keep this hobby affordable by not spending small fortunes on rare eggs. :)

I think it is great that you are providing your community with your service, time, and education on poultry. If breaking even is necessary for you to continue this work, I'd say do what you need to in order for you to be able to perform the community service. Many of the swappers sell their eggs through many methods, and only offer those they can't sell as swaps. For these swappers, I don't think they'd care what you do with their eggs.

I'm confused. Did I swap three sets of midget eggs last night or two. I thought one to Bettacreek and two to Profti, and claimed three paypals. Please tell me if senility has set in? God lord 49 ain't that old is it?

CL $100 incubator arrived today! Next week I should be getting the ova easy shipped too! Yeah!

According to the log (here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Am7IlDTXygsBdHB3VDhwYjJBdTg1YVhWT3JsZXpsTVE#gid=7 ),
yes, you traded three sets of midget eggs.

Susan, I guess it was my post that got you down. I totally think it was great that you helped out hollowoak, and thought I was helping out by making a suggestion to avoid confusion in the future. Please don't quit being nice. :D

Hi All!

Honestly, There is NO WAY I am going to be able to keep all the chicks from all the eggs I am going to be getting this spring. (gulp) I finally compiled a list and was starting to worry about what the husband was going to say BEFORE I was offered these 40 Dorking eggs I now have in my incubator. So if selling chicks from this swap is wrong, I am in big trouble.

And , After just getting the 40 dorking eggs into the incubator, the husband (knowing nothing about the bazillion eggs and chicks I am soon to be getting) actually started "the talk" last night in the car about setting an upward limit on the amount of chickens I am allowed to have. 'sup with that???!!!???
