Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Is anyone here good with the chicken calculator? You really have to be more than a genetics beginner to use it I think. I've got my Lav Ams in the mixed flock right now and there's a Basque roo in addition to the Lav Am roo. I'm curious how strange the Lav Am / Basque cross would be.
These should be all barred chicks split to Lav. You'll have to breed them back to each other to get barred Lav.
I have a question on sex-links. I have been reading up on them lately because I am trying to hatch some for a friend. What I have read is that almost any roo (except barred) over barred hens (mine are Barred Rock) will give you sex-links. So DMRippy was nice enough to confirm that my EE roo (Columbian pattern, I think) over my BR would give me sex-links. Those eggs are in the bator now and I am anxiously awaiting that hatch.

The EASIEST way to think about sex links is this: ANY solid colored rooster Over ANY barred or barred gene hen Last summer, though, I hatched some BR eggs from the hens that are in with my SFH just to see what I would get. They came out looking very much like SFH, they weren't black and they didn't have spots on their heads even though they were both boys. Why didn't it work? Any ideas?

Well, I know I got upset when I got pullet eggs after paying a pretty penny for them, but quite honestly it was one of my best hatches on shipped eggs and all the chicks did well and don't seem any the worse for wear. They are about 1.5 YO now and doing great. As long as they are fertile, I don't really think it makes a difference.
I've bought sulmtaler and legbar pullet eggs and they all are developing so far. Lots of energy in those smaller packages LOL, but I knew up front that was what I was getting. I think as long as the seller says pullet eggs then it is up to the buyer to decide to get those or to keep shopping.

Question for everyone, do you think it is acceptable for a seller to sell very small pullet eggs for hatching? I paid 40.00 for eggs plus shipping and the majority of the eggs are small pullet eggs. After reading the ad I do see it said hen/pullet. I just don't think it is ethical to do that, wait until your eggs are decent for hatching especially since they are being shipped all the way across the country.

What do y'all think?

Atleast it was disclosed in the ad. Had it not been that would be wrong IMO.

I recd 4 pullet eggs as a bonus with some other shipped eggs. I was very excited when all 4 pullet eggs hatched. They also traveled from Pennsylvania all the way to La. It was hard to imagine a chick coming out a tiny lil' egg.

They may do well for you if they didn't get scrambled!

Good luck!

I really do not mind. The fertility on my LF pullet eggs were so much better than my older girls. I hatched many, many LF pullet eggs and I haven't had any more issues than with hen eggs. As Ssterling said, it was disclosed in the ad, too. I don't like it when they are super tiny bantam eggs, though. I had a couple of those and the chicks hatched, but a couple were kind of unthrifty for a while. Seems both came out to be my better offspring of the batch, though.

I guess it depends. I have no problem recieving pullet eggs, if they have been fertility checked. :shrug I can understand getting tiny eggs and being a little frustrated, I haven't seemed to have any problems with the chicks being unhealthier or growin up smaller. I send my BCM pullet eggs with m orders, but I always try include a couple extras, and I don't solely ship pullet eggs. Sorry you didn't get what you expected though. It comes down to what you think it worth the money.
