Wow! I didn't realize they were that big when newly hatched.

uumm wow, it appears 2 or 3 times the size of our french white muscovy's when they hatch, but right in line with the size of our geese

LOL. I thought he was big but I never hatched them before, lol. I think the closeness of the camera also makes him look a tiny bit bigger than he really is. Can't wait to see what the others look like today! Maybe he is just gonna be a big boy

Are pea combs dominant? I am guessing the are...
I was so worried about not being able to tell my BCM chicks apart from the OEs that look just like it... Until I noticed all my OEs have pea combs! That's a relief. I double checked, since when they hatched and since I have been using nail polish, so they are all still marked. Also just had another OE hatch and it has a pea comb. These are from my BCM too and my silver ameruacana hen.

Pea combs are dominant but you will occasionally get a straight comb so don't rely 100% on it

Morning guys! I woke up to 7 beautiful dead baby buns

She didn't cover them at all and they got cold. One was a beautiful little chocolate too. I'm hoping this is just first time mom error.

I am sorry to hear that. We had an angora female when I was growing up and we tried many times to get her to take care of her babies, but she always jumped away from them and they always got cold and died. We watched her like a hawk one welping and finally figured out that her belly fur was too thick for them to feed - once we cut off all her belly hair and the babies started feeding she did fine. My theory was she didn't connect with them until they actually fed - then they were her babies.

They are ADDICTIVE! Honestly, if I had to choose just ONE breed, that would be the one!

Well bantam Cochins have my heart, but these are a close second!

Some of my eggs from the incubator accident when it was unplugged for about 12 hours survived and have hatched! They were delayed by a couple of days, but 3 out of 7 Cayugas made it (they were closer to hatch and I had 4 late deaths from the extended cooling). The 6/13 MFLs that were developing at the time the bator incident occurred (4 were clears & 3 quit) all made it to lockdown. Three hatched just fine, 1 hatched with assistance, 1 died after pipping (pipped at bottom and drowned), and the other has pipped on the bottom and may require assistance to hatch. I'm so happy some of them made it!

I have a question for those of you with MFLs. I thought all the chicks were supposed to be the same color? I have chicks that are two very different colors. Three that have hatched are a tawny color. The one that died and one of the others that hatched are dark. The chick hasn't dried completely, but it appears to be mostly brown. ???

I am really glad you had some hatch from that batch. Just goes to show you they are fighters and don't give up when they get cooled down. I was really amazed when I was checking a broody - there were three eggs on the outskirts of her nest and they all felt cold - I almost took them away from her but I left them, next time I checked her they were all in, and all of those eggs hatched.

Aren't they the greatest? I searched a long time for "my" breed and Cochins just sucked me right on in, lol! I have a bantam SL pair (with eggs in the bator!), 2 columbian pullets (getting a roo this summer), lemon blues in the bator and going this weekend to pick up black mottled and blue mottled.

I have silkies too and they are very sweet, but just something about those Cochins! I have actually decided to sell my bantam orps in order to have more Cochin space....
