I am scared to death to take anything to them. I keep hearing horror stories of resp. illnesses. There is one close to me coming up soon. I might go, but I am not going to take anything with me. I sell to feed stores locally. I also have business cards at all the stores and Co-ops. If I have some I am left with I list them in the trader paper and on craigslist, both are free to list. DH got me a sign to put up at the end of our barn drive, but I still have not done it yet. Free advertising is pretty awesome. It does come with risks... I have a woman that calls me almost daily about a chick she wants to buy. I lowered the price to 5.00 for her, and she still never comes to pick it up.... Just calls and chatters on, much like I just did........lawl
Hmmmm..... hadn't thought of that. I don't want illnesses for sure! It makes sense though, I am really careful about adding birds. I won't add any birds I have haven't hatched because I am trying to protect them.

me too.
and poultry shows scare me, too. how do you take an animal to a poultry show and then incorporate it back into your flock?

I actually quarantine mine when they come back home. They are housed in different housing then the breeding flocks too. Right now the Silkies are in a small barn/shack up closer to the house. They will stay there until DD decided if she will show this year or not. They are kept off the ground after having their bath's and blow dry ("having their hairs did..") in a single chicken occupancy cage with pine shavings that are changed daily.

I don't dooooo poultry show anymore. Just about half the time when my birds would place no matter what I did to keep them healthy I would end up loosing a couple it wasn't worth it to me.

As for swaps go, If you are selling you really aren't close enough to anybody else's birds to contract any disease. If it is anything like ours you get your own lot and not everyone sells birds and you get to choose your own lot. I always choose one by a vendor not by other birds. Not sure how everyone else's does it.

I am not aware of a Farm License needed in TN. To be tax exempt we just had to fill out a form for the state. Some things GUARANTEE tax exemption status. Greenbelting is one that is how we got ours. You also have to have $2500 a year in sales (not PROFITS). That is going to be different state by state on that.

Here in Ohio you only have to have $500 farm profit a yr to be tax exempt. I love being tax exempt it saves me so much money on poultry supplies and feed. I claim every penny I make from my birds every year come tax season. I don't write off my expenses however though cause i have little ones I claim. But once they are grown and I can't claim them anymore I will be writing off the expenses. I Used to work for Jackson Hewitt I was the assistant Manager and was to be promoted to the manager the next year and have my own office to run until my hubby decided he liked me better at home.

I really liked my job and miss it all the time. I have a job there anytime I want to go back. I told hubby once all the kids are in school full time I was going back to work no if's and's or butt's about it.

I am probably going to be selling at a swap tomorrow. I can't decide if its worth it, I har mostly cockerels I need sold and I have doubts they will sell. It's 40 minutes away, and is have to bring my kids...
I don't plan on bringing anythig back with me. I will have away cockerels if they aren't going to sell before bringing them home. If I absolutely have to bring something home, it will not go near my other birds, it will be in isolation, just like any new bird would.
Going to a swap to sell is kind of a last resort for me. I have some single chicks that are of different breeds, like a Malay, that I just don't want to keep. Since I pretty much live 40-60 minutes from the surrounding towns, most people will not drive out for a single chick.
I actually got lucky yesterday, I had a woman who wanted a silkie I had for sale, and she was willing to drive 40 minutes for it... Then she ended up buying 4 other chicks, and I gave her a fifth for free. I had no idea what kind of chick it was, but she had a four year old girl that loved it. Now I am rambling haha!
