I don't dooooo poultry show anymore. Just about half the time when my birds would place no matter what I did to keep them healthy I would end up loosing a couple it wasn't worth it to me.

As for swaps go, If you are selling you really aren't close enough to anybody else's birds to contract any disease. If it is anything like ours you get your own lot and not everyone sells birds and you get to choose your own lot. I always choose one by a vendor not by other birds.  Not sure how everyone else's does it.

I help to organize the poultry swaps for the fall and spring here in Oregon and we have had issues though usually in the fall when the weather is less desirable. There was an issue with people bringing home ILT last year. I personally don't bring home any adult birds nor do I bring anything that will potentially come home with me. I basically only bring chicks.

If you quarantine and don't wear the same clothing or boots/shoes and wash or sanitize them before going out to a flock you should be more than fine.

Heather, we're looking into doing pigs this year!  How much would you say your feed cost for one pig is from weiner to butcher?  That's what we're having a hard time figuring.

Man that's a whole ton of variables. We have a local mill that has good quality feed. We get tonage to save on cost though. I'd have to go back through the numbers again to see exactly what feed costs were but it was far less expensive than what we would've paid from the grocery store had we purchased the 200 lbs of pork we put in the freezer. This year we're spending 100/ea on our Berkshire weaners but they'll be a little older than when we picked them up last year so that will work out as its three weeks less in feed which is pretty significant when there are 12.

I am not aware of a Farm License needed in TN. To be tax exempt we just had to fill out a form for the state. Some things GUARANTEE tax exemption status. Greenbelting is one that is how we got ours. You also have to have $2500 a year in sales (not PROFITS). That is going to be different state by state on that.
Your right, its not actually a licence. Just the tax exempt form for selling agriculture. I have about given up on the rest, when I call the agriculture office they say, "hmm... maybe if you call so and so they can help..... if you find out your answer let me know, everybody just sells stuff without any other paperwork" I found that to be completely useless information, but, none the less.... information.

IDK for here in TN.... maybe 10 acres here to get the exemption from the state. Not sure about the IRS part..... I will say this the IRS will not allow you to claim anything if you call it a HOBBY FARM. They think it is your HOBBY and not a JOB or a Working FARM. Trust me mine is a JOB... Full Time too.
They did not ask me for any acreage. I know people here with under 1 acre that are tax exempt. They only care if you sell $1000 or more in agriculture per year. I was really blown away by how easy it was.

Wow, this has been a week of advice. I have one more issue that I would love input on. I have a new Sportsman (

), but I am having really weird hatches. I have an excellent hatch rate on turkeys (about 85%) and ducks (90%). In the same incubator, I have a terrible rate on chickens (about 25-30%). Now I realize it could be the eggs (mostly compliments of Krazy and Flocks and my own), but it just seems weird. And I can't hatch a Maran egg to save my life. I have tried about 30 and 1 egg. The seramas did well and SFH are about 40%. Any ideas from the peanut gallery? Maybe humidity? Temp is stable at 100, though I think I will turn it down to 99.5. What does everyone think? Maybe just weird luck.
