I picked up my seven calico cochin bantams today. They look like they range in age from a couple of days to two weeks. These are the mellowist chicks I have ever seen. I've never had cochins is that just their personality or were they really handled a lot? My goofy Arkansas Blues (while in brooder and confined) are psychos. They calm down once they have some space.

Wow, this has been a week of advice. I have one more issue that I would love input on. I have a new Sportsman (

), but I am having really weird hatches. I have an excellent hatch rate on turkeys (about 85%) and ducks (90%). In the same incubator, I have a terrible rate on chickens (about 25-30%). Now I realize it could be the eggs (mostly compliments of Krazy and Flocks and my own), but it just seems weird. And I can't hatch a Maran egg to save my life. I have tried about 30 and 1 egg. The seramas did well and SFH are about 40%. Any ideas from the peanut gallery? Maybe humidity? Temp is stable at 100, though I think I will turn it down to 99.5. What does everyone think? Maybe just weird luck.

I run mine at 99.5 and about 30-40% humidity. My Sportsman is an older 1502 with just the turning racks no hatcher at the bottom. I use 2 coolerbators for hatching and I have been getting a 100% hatch rate on my own eggs and about 95% on local eggs. Shipped eggs are another story. The PO does such a number on them that I feel lucky when I get more than 2 or 3 to hatch. The exception to that happened with the last batch of eggs I hatched. Jeannie sent 7 eggs I had one quitter and the other 6 are all running around the brooder now. I have only hatched chickens out in it so far so I can't give you any input on turkeys or ducks.

:fl I hatched out a solitary bourbon a few days ago and it seemed fine. I guess I didn't pay as much attention to how it was doing as I did last time because they seemed to learn quickly in a group. This little one still seems very dazed and fragile. So I removed it with a few Mille Fleur Cochin babies and made eggs and put down water. I didn't force feed it but I put egg mash in its beak. I'm really hoping it makes it through the next 24 hours and I know now to pay more attention to those poults the first week to two.

I have a very hard time with marans as well, out of 8 that I got a few weeks back, 5 went into lockdown, 1 hatched and then died two days later

my little frizzle cochin roo is very mellow and follows me around everywhere, he is the reason I want more! Going to the auction tonight and will be bringing home a couple lady friends for him, from Joe Villamil. Then going Wednesday to get some calicos as well.

I have to thank you if it weren't for you I would have either payed double the price or not been able to get any eggs at all from that person.

Now it is my turn to rant a little:

I have a few searches saved for hatching eggs on Ebay. A couple of days ago I got a notice that there is a result for my search for Bielefelders. Someone has a presale of hatching eggs that will be shipped AFTER September 20! Ebay has a rule against offering presales-it must be shipped within thirty days, so they have the estimated arrival as April 30. I reported them for violation of the rules, but nothing has been done about it. Now today I got a notice that there is a Partridge Barthuhner egg auction up (for delivery after October 1st) from the same person!
