Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

I have a ton of birds to ship this next week. I am rethinking how we box and how we label them. All of our geese are wing banded with numbers and our farm name and we record wing band numbers. Now to think how to protect the chicks and ducklings.

The box we sent that was ripped open had 2 zip ties per side AND packing taped wrapped over them, along with the shipping label over the top. The zip ties were gone, the side was torn half way down and the entire thing taped back shut.

Okay. If someone wants to make a BOATLOAD of money, they need to open their own shipping company for live poultry and hatching eggs. :th

but would people be willing to pay the shipping costs? It would be more expensive to use just a poultry and egg shipping, then it would be to send them USPS

It was kind of meant to be cheeky, but I bet if you first opened only in a certain region and only transported once a month or so in that region, you could make money. Then, you could slowly expand.

Wow! I am not completely surprised by the ignorance displayed by some postal workers stealing birds...but it just makes me sick to think how many people in this world have no morals to live by. I am so sorry for everyone's trouble! If those chicks were stalled--someone somewhere has access to video surveillance of it. I'd call the local police dept and file it as outright theft. No mail should be opened at all by law anyway, postal worker or not, so that in and of itself is a federal offense you can prosecute for.

true...

wonder what kind of mess you would have to go through with agriculture to go across state lines with live birds?

are they allowed to even open the packages? and not even mark that they did so? I mean, I know they can inspect things, but just to have some chicks disappear? So sorry Profti

The last time I picked up chicks from the PO the lady said she "checked" on them, because they've had problems with dead chicks. I kinda just said okay, but my thought was what are they going to do if they are dead? Not call me??

please see below.............illegal for any postal worker to open any mail for any reason
It is ILLEGAL to OPEN ANY MAIL that does not belong to you. They RIPPED my box open, litterally tearing the sides out of it. Postal workers are to NEVER open any mail live birds or not. Oddly enough they only "removed" the colored chicks, leaving ALL the yellow/white ones. they also took ducklings. Its theft while in transit and isnt acceptible on any level. The fact they were stupid enough to put water in an open container and then ship them 9which is against USPS safe shipping regulations) is just another check on the idiot scale for this claim.
Ummm....my PO said that they can open any package they want, if it is suspisious. For example, if something is mailed media mail, yet rattles....Or if they think you might be mailing something that is hazardous...alcohol based fragrance, paint...

Quote: wrong, they can NOT as just general USPS workers open any mail. That opens them up to theft charges. They CAN make you the sender open it for inspection before they accept it though. BIG difference.Once an item of mail is ACCEPTED, scanned in and in the system NO ONE can legally open it but the sender or receiver. (with the exception of a postal inspector - which people at your local office are not)

and nice website the postal inspector general has for filing fraud, and theft complaints https://www.uspsoig.gov/index.cfm

Hmmm... good to know.

Morning everyone! It's going to be a crazy one today. Getting everything cleaned and ready for the weekend as DH is taking me to the coast for my birthday! Very excited.

First I have to clean coops and brooders and fix our hoop house then clean my office and pack :th

Oh and I have eggs packed that I can send out today. There are 15 buff fav and about 9 Olive Eggers I think. Could ship them all together for $40 pp or $25/buffs $15/olives. Let me know if you're interested and ill post them today.
